We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Louey Peraza. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Louey below.
Louey, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
I have found that constantly looking for alternate sources of inspiration seems to help me stay creative consistently. I tend to explore different kinds of music pretty regularly which always helps to give me a different perspective to approach creative problems. Sometimes trying different art forms helps to reengage with fresh ears as well. Other times going on walks and observing nature or wildlife changes my headspace and allows me to see past creative blocks. It all depends on my mood and the problem I am faced with.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Louey, I sing and play guitar in a four piece alternative rock band from Baltimore called Fetcher. Taking a mix of inspiration from anything that sounds good to us, our sound is a funky soup of everything we grew up listening to and have found along the way. Our fist full length record “So Long Small World” was recorded and produced by us in our basement and was recorded to sound as close to our live sound as possible. As lifelong fans of live music we wanted to make a record that wasn’t pitch corrected or quantized, something raw and human, that felt like you were listening to four people in a room, not just computers. Our sound has been compared to the Foo Fighters, the Flaming Lips, and Jimmy Eat World.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think being committed to the vision for the band we had when we started has really helped us stay focused on moving onwards and upwards. Obviously with live music being a very social event it helped to get good at talking to people. It can be really intimidating to talk to strangers sometimes but the more I made myself do it the more comfortable I have become with it and i think it has helped a lot with networking and booking shows. The last thing I would say had a big impact on us was definitely everyones drive to deliver the best recordings we could for our new record. We all worked really hard to learn recording and production techniques so that we would all be proud of the songs we wrote. The time we spent gaining all that knowledge was truly crucial to achieving what we have with this record.
All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
Right now our biggest challenge is getting booked for bigger shows with touring acts. We would like to start expanding our reach to other states and to build our fanbase more but getting booked for those shows has been tough. We managed to lock down a couple cool shows that should be very beneficial for us and in the meantime we have been looking into finding a manager or booking agent to help us out with getting better shows.
