We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Louis Thomass a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Louis, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
First things first: you’re never the only one in the room. There are always people who’ve done the same things, overcome the same obstacles and most importantly who are better than you. That being said, if there’s nobody around you who you could ask for advice or look up to it’s always best to try things on your own. In my opinion, that’s always the best possible scenario.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Louis Thomass and I’m 26 years old. I’m a singer, songwriter and guitar player. Last year my wife and I moved to Los Angeles, CA to live our dream and to pursue my journey as an artist. Taking that step was something we’d dreamed of for a long time. My heroes pretty much all lived in Southern California at one point in their careers. The unique thing about is that we can’t think of anybody else who did the same thing it that shape or form. We literately came here with nothing. No money, no job, and there weren’t a lotta people we knew out here. It definitely taught us to do things ourselves without relying on any outside help.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
if I was asked to give someone advice, I’d say always go for your dreams and listen to your gut. It’s the most cliche but it’s true. The best things in my life always came out of those two things.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
My number one obstacle to overcome is living in the moment. I always think ahead and miss a lot by doing that. Then when something is in the past I think back and wonder why I wasn’t able to cherish that moment more. I’m still learning and it’s my goal to get better at living in the present.
