We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Louise Cutler a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Louise, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I figure if you live long enough, you will discover that your purpose has been in you all a long. You were born with it. My purpose has alway been a part of Gods plan, He is the author and finisher of my faith. It all started during my youth, when going to church was a habit—it was simply what we did growing up. But as I got older, God began to reveal Himself in more significant ways in my life, and that’s when I believe my true journey began.
I’ve learned that my purpose exists outside of my own wants and needs and is rooted in how I treat others. Our purpose on earth is to serve one another and to be intentional in our actions. For me, it’s about truly seeing people and placing their needs above my own when given the opportunity.
About a year ago, God gave me a mantra: People are more important. At first, I wasn’t entirely sure what that meant for my life, but as the year unfolded, it became clear. Whenever I was faced with the choice between prioritizing my own needs or helping someone else, God showed me how to put people first. This became especially clear during my Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for my first children’s book. Several people I invited to back the project were going through hardships and couldn’t support it financially. Instead of feeling disappointed, God gave me the chance to help them—even though I, too, had financial needs at the time. Their needs outweighed mine, and God was teaching me that putting others first is part of His will.
In the end, I was able to raise the funds for my campaign, but more importantly, I learned a valuable lesson: when I align with God’s purpose and put His will before my own, He always shows up in extraordinary ways. This experience reaffirmed that my purpose is centered on love, service, and placing people above my personal desires.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Professionally I am and artist writer, andcurator. My work centers around connecting with people on a spiritual and emotional level. My art is deeply rooted in nature, with a focus on peace, harmony, and our collective role as caretakers of the earth. I create paintings using acrylic and metal leaf, and I’m also a bronze sculptor. More recently, I’ve ventured into writing, having just published my first children’s book, The Ant and The Curious Little Boy, which is an accomplishment I’m very proud of.
What sets me apart is my belief in “creative procrastination.” This concept allows me to stay productive even when I feel blocked or uncertain in one art form—I simply shift to another, whether it’s writing, gardening, or sculpting. This fluidity keeps my creativity alive and allows me to explore new ideas continuously.
At the heart of everything I do is my faith in God and my desire to uplift others. One of the most exciting projects I’m currently working on is The Mirror Project, where I’m designing mirrors inscribed with words of encouragement, aimed at helping people see their own worth and beauty. I’m also expanding The Beauty of Blackness Fine Art Show, an annual event in Fort Collins that celebrates Black American artists. This show provides a platform for underrepresented voices and is growing every year.
In addition to the art and writing, I’m curating several upcoming exhibitions, including Dresses with Pockets at the Lakewood Art Center in 2025. This exhibition explores the multifaceted roles and experiences of women through the symbolism of dresses with pockets, each dress is designed by a female artist.
What excites me most about my work is the ability to bring people together, whether through my art, books, or curatorial projects. I’m constantly seeking new ways to create and to serve my community. My artistic journey is ongoing, and I look forward to continuing to explore different forms of expression and helping others find their voices as well.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are perseverance, adaptability, and faith. Each of these has played a key role in my growth, not only as an artist but as a person navigating the ups and downs of life and the creative process.
Perseverance: The creative journey is not always smooth. There are times when I have faced rejection, creative blocks, or challenges that made me question whether I was on the right path. But perseverance is what helped me push through those tough moments. For those early in their journey, my advice is to embrace the process—failures are not the end but stepping stones. Stay committed to your vision, even when the road feels long or uncertain. Every setback can be a lesson if you persevere.
Adaptability: The ability to adapt has been crucial for me, especially in transitioning between different art forms or approaches when I feel creatively stuck. This is where my concept of “creative procrastination” comes in, allowing me to shift my focus and continue creating in other areas. To develop adaptability, I encourage you to stay open-minded and experiment with different mediums, ideas, or perspectives. Being adaptable keeps you from being stagnant and helps you grow in unexpected ways.
Faith: My faith in God has been the foundation of everything I do. It gives me strength, direction, and purpose, especially in moments of doubt or difficulty. For those seeking to cultivate a strong inner compass, I would suggest finding something greater than yourself that guides you. Whether it’s faith, passion, or purpose, anchor yourself in something that fuels you through the highs and lows.
For those early in their journey, be patient with yourself and remember that your path will unfold in its own time. Focus on building these qualities, and trust that every experience—whether positive or negative—is part of your growth.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I would say my faith in the Lord has been the most instrumental in helping me overcome challenges and shaping me into the person I am today. However, I would be remiss not to include the many people God has placed in my life—friends, mentors, and even strangers. I believe life is a learning experience, and we have to embrace it in all its fullness. Every encounter we have, whether good or bad, hard or easy, is an opportunity to learn and aquire knowledge.
Every person we meet and every place we’ve been offers new skills and lessons that help us grow. Knowledge comes from these experiences, and true wisdom is gained from living fully, being present, and appreciating the people and the world around us. While book knowledge is important, nothing compares to the richness of life experience, of truly living in the here and now. Each moment and interaction can teach us something that no textbook ever could.
