Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lourans Mikhail. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Lourans, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
Everyone will tell you to do something they have seen or to stop doing the art style you are developing, mainly because they don’t have the vision. They see the finished products that already exist and their view of the world is limited. That is where artists come into play and push the boundaries of “everything has already been done”.
You do it because you believe in what you are doing, it isn’t easy, it’s lonely at times, and with how social media rewards things that are similar and match their aesthetic trends, you wonder a lot if you should continue on the path.
Then you remember the people that are dealing with the fact they never followed their passion so they project their fears on you, so I used that to keep going, to keep doing my own individual art style.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I was born in Baghdad, Iraq, and my ethnicity is Assyrian and Chaldean. I was raised in
Chicago, joined the Marines and I served 13 years in the service, after getting out I pursued my Bachelors in graphic design. However, I decided to be an artist, I couldn’t see myself doing anything else honestly.
Since defining myself as an artist, I have worked in multiple mediums ranging from, murals, sculpture, painting and graphic design, working with ceramics, wood, stone, metal, oil, acrylic, and spray paint.
I have developed 3 different and ongoing cohesive bodies of work. August 1st, 2025 will be the opening of my 3rd solo show titled, “A Type Of Perspective”. This will be the first time I will be showcasing my “Anamorphic Alphabet” series solely on its own.
The show will be at Thumbprint gallery which is located at 920 Kline St. Suite 104, in La Jolla, and it will be on display for the whole month of August.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think perseverance, having a moral compass, and coming to grips with the fact that not everyone is for you, the quality over quantity way of thinking are some of the defining factors that have helped me along the way. It’s something I still have to reckon with at times, and understanding I am allowed to feel a certain way, but then asking and allowing myself to sit in my own emotions. Figuring out why I let something interrupt that flow state. I don’t think it will go away it will just get easier with each rejection, and failed attempt. Because that is part of the learning process, failure, in ourselves and our work.
Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
Finishing everything for my solo-show “A Type Of Perspective”, is the current obstacle in my cross-hair. With this being my third solo show, I am learning from previous ones. I have become better organized in my work flow and have been able to increase the output each time, while focusing on the overall quality of each work of art. I want to show a linear progression and the increased development of my technical skills, whether it is painting, sculpting or just in the overall theme and cohesiveness of the body of work.
This being the first show solely dedicated to my Anamorphic Alphabet series, I had to think about how people would react to this completely different body of work, and if they would like it compared to my “Different Strokes” series and last two solo shows on that body of work.
Thankfully the input has been resoundingly positive so far, and it seems to be well received.
