Meet Lu Mendoza

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lu Mendoza. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lu below.

Lu, so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
Self-discipline, for me, has become the ability to control my feelings and thoughts, especially when fighting my impostor syndrome. Most of my healthy habits come from the people around me, as they give me the courage to pursue my goals and overcome any challenge I might face. If it weren’t for all the people who have offered me a sense of belonging, I would not have gotten as far as I have. They are the ones keeping me accountable for my dreams and the goals I desire. They are the ones that keep me motivated and disciplined as I look up to them for support and encouragement.
Overall, self-discipline and encouragement from the people around me have become crucial to my personal growth. While it has come from numerous people, there is a handful of them that has made a significant impact on the way I want to perceive myself.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Filmmaking is an incredible artistic medium that has a lot of moving parts. Still, visuals can really help make a story come to life. However, the narrative, sound, and visual collaboration make a film relatable and lovable. As a filmmaker, movies are not just about creating a product but also a safe and open space for everyone to collaborate and create stories we believe in. Every individual has a unique story to tell. As a filmmaker, I provide them with the platform and resources to bring their vision to life. I believe in the power of storytelling to inspire change and create a positive impact in society.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I believe that having an eye for detail, remaining open to feedback, and having the ability to collaborate are the three qualities that have been most useful in my journey. Regardless of how much experience or technical knowledge someone might, I have come to realize that life is about learning, no matter how for in a journey you feel that you are, it is important to always be learning and be willing to listen to what other members in your community say about you. This comes in hand with how willing you are to collaborate and how effectively you can to it. I will always advise to continue evolving, don’t be afraid to ask questions and always be nice, but don’t be afraid to take risks and try new things.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I always want to meet and learn from new people, but I don’t have a specific set of people I want to collaborate with. However, I’m open to working with anyone who shares my passion for filmmaking and is interested in exploring new territory. I get especially excited when I hear from those with unique stories and experiences they want to tell. All perspectives are really important, and when it comes to an industry like filmmaking, these backgrounds are the ones that are capable of creating innovative and distinctive ideas. By working with others who share our vision and passion, we can create something extraordinary that would be impossible to achieve on our own.
