We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Luanna Singh a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Luanna, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I believe success grows from helping others succeed. If you are the only one in the room, you should be the least important person in the room. You don’t build a business. You build people. And people build the business.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My name is Luanna Singh, 35 years old, from Miami, FL. I’m a self employed Personal Trainer for my brand, bodybylulu. I was a former NBA Miami Heat Dancer in 2007-2010 and the current Official Trainer of the Miami Heat Dancers since 2021. I earned my Bachelors Degree in Marketing from Florida International University as well as an Associate’s Degree in Merchandising from the Fashion Institute of Technology. Apart from training, I’ve worked with many brands as an affiliate/ambassador such as lululemon, orgain, bala, and the Miami HEAT.
I’ve been a certified personal trainer for the past 7 years and with every year, I’ve evolved and have managed to break through obstacles I never thought I could accomplish. The 2020 Covid year was the real test to my personal growth. I thought it was the end of bodybylulu. I even started looking up alternatives to change to my career field. All of my client were in person and I had never tried online training. I decided to get past the self-doubt and offer classes and nutrition via Zoom.
Within a couple of weeks, I had hundreds of sign ups. I was known for my “12 week challenge” which included both live and pre-recorded total body weighted workouts , a nutritional guideline, and a live health seminar via Zoom. To be honest, clients were getting faster and better results online than they
were in-person. And that’s when my level of confidence changed. The more confidence I had in myself, the more confidence my clients had in my program. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, public speaking skills, continuing education/certifications, and growing my confidence were most impactful in my journey to success.
My advice to anyone looking to improve in these areas would be to embrace failure. Failure does not define you but it helps shape you. You learn the most from your mistakes and you’ll never know what something could be if you never try.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
My biggest area of growth is transitioning from HIIT style workouts to Low Impact – Sculpt & Strength workouts. Not only have they been more beneficial to my clients who are in the 30-60 year old demographic but for myself as well. At first, I had a difficult time changing all of my workouts from high impact exercises like burpees to low impact exercises like bird dogs. Now. I fully embrace them and prefer it. Sometimes we need to accept that is less is more!
