We were lucky to catch up with Lucía Roig Lago recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lucía, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
Understanding optimism as an attitude, even though I don’t always manage it, I try to stay optimistic in life. For that, there’s a mantra I repeat to myself, which is that if I take steps with love, I’ll arrive at a destination made with love. Meaning, to keep moving forward and trust that if I do what I love, like drawing, or make decisions from a place of love, the place I end up in will be the result of those steps.
With so many horrible news stories about wars or violence, or sometimes things just happen along the way that knock you down, I think what matters is where I put the focus. If there’s something I can do about those bumps in the road, I’ll do it, and in the meantime I focus on the gift that is breathing in the present moment. And smiling—cliché, but it tricks the brain into feeling happy and optimistic.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Currently, I study and practice to become a visual development artist. Within the art and entertainment industry, visual development fascinates me, because it’s where ideas and stories come to life and become visible. Thinking about how a character, an environment, or an object can say so much just through its design fascinates me: how the shape—whether it’s rounder or more angular—can transmit certain emotions, or how texture can show what material something is made of or whether it’s worn down or not… I love that, and I aspire to do it professionally.
At the end of the day, from my perspective, we just want to be told stories, whether it’s in a book, series, movie, comic, or someone telling it out loud, and it’s part of who we are since ancient times. I love giving a vision to those stories, and it excites me to think about all the stories that haven’t been told yet.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The first quality that marked the beginning of my path is the need to create, having that impulse that pushes you to move and make something. The second is fascination—I don’t think you can create anything if nothing catches your attention or you don’t like anything. At least for me, being fascinated by things like how the light comes in through the window or the music playing in the street inspires me and complements that desire to create. And the third is love, or passion. Don’t you feel that when you do something with love, the result is better? At least in my case, I need to love what I’m doing in order to do it. Without any of these qualities, I wouldn’t have begun my journey.
For people who are at the beginning of their path, I’d tell them to follow that inner voice that loves and gets fascinated, no matter what it is. That voice will guide them where they need to go. The path is every step you take, so enjoy the journey, and the destination will be the fruit of the steps you took.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’d love to collaborate and work in a team with more people to create something! For me, I look for people who love what they do and who have the desire to tell a story; people who want to work toward a shared vision and bring it to life. I’m open to any format and any form of art, although I have to say I’m a big fan of webtoons and fantasy. If anyone reading this would like to collaborate, that would be amazing!
