We recently connected with Lucinda Bruce and have shared our conversation below.
Lucinda, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I suffered a spinal injury at the age of 26 which I battled with for two years before having to quit my job because I could not work at the same capacity I could before the injury. Shortly after quitting, I was diagnosed with Cancer which took another two years of my life to be cleared from, thankfully, only requiring surgery and no other forms of treatment. I saw myself as extremely lucky. After two major back-to-back life changing incidents, life had a different purpose. I saw things very differently and felt the trivial things of life were not as important as being happy and going after one’s dreams. That’s what I’ve been doing ever since, and if I ever feel the resilience in the pursuit of my dreams waning, I just have to think about what I’ve been through and how far I’ve come and how lucky I am to have had access to life saving surgery, without which, I would most likely not be here. My resilience comes from knowing that each day is a gift, and if I’m not doing my absolute best to make the most of it, then I can be grateful in believing that even if i fail, I was happy giving it my best shot.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I love making films, it’s my dream, and I’m getting to live it every day at the moment. It’s hard work and doesn’t pay the bills (yet) but I love what I do. I’m very passionate about movies in general but have always dreamed about making movies, and now I do. My love of film drives me to learn more about my industry and to get myself into a position where I can be someone who helps others make their dreams come true too.
I’ve been in and out of the film industry since I started acting at the age of 11. I became a producer by accident after moving to Vancouver in 2013 when I volunteered as a Behind the Scenes Photographer in the set of a short film called The Starlight heist, and I’ve never looked back. I’ve since produced over 40 feature films, shorts, and other pieces of content, some of which have won awards at festivals all around the world. Life is too short to not do what you love.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Passion… Perserverance… Patience… Just three of the key areas in terms of qualities that I believe people need in order to get through some of the more difficult moments that can be dealt in the Film/TV industry.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
Fully support me in following my dreams.
