We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lucinda Dilworth. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lucinda below.
Lucinda, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic has its roots from the years I spent as a competitive alpine skier. Skiing at a high level wasn’t just a sport for me; it was a lifestyle that demanded everything I had—physically, mentally, and emotionally. I spent months away from home, living in shared quarters with teammates, pushing through early mornings, tough workouts, and constant competition. Every day was about showing up, improving, and striving to be better than I was the day before.
That kind of discipline stays with you. When I retired from skiing due to injury, I initially struggled to find a new direction. But I soon realised that the habits I built as an athlete—commitment, resilience, and a focus on incremental growth—translated perfectly to my work as an artist. Art, like skiing, requires persistence and the willingness to take risks. When I’m developing a new projection-mapped installation or an animation, I bring the same mindset I had on the slopes: tackling challenges head-on, staying focused on the details, and trusting the process.
What I value most from my skiing days is the lesson that growth happens outside of comfort zones. Whether I’m experimenting with a new medium or solving technical issues during an event, I draw on the same determination and creative problem-solving I used to navigate icy courses or tough competitions. My work ethic is, at its core, a blend of discipline and passion—something that skiing instilled in me and art continues to nurture.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a multimedia artist who brings art to life through immersive installations. My work explores the human experience in a digitally connected world, with a focus on the female form and identity. Using projection mapping and animation, I transform spaces into dynamic, thought-provoking environments that invite people to engage with art in new and unexpected ways.
What excites me most is the freedom to create and experiment—whether that’s bringing a visual idea to life in a new way or seeing how others interact with my work. The most rewarding part is when my creations connect with an audience and spark a moment of reflection or inspiration.
Some of my proudest career moments include exhibiting at the British Art Fair at Saatchi Gallery, collaborating with Peugeot on a projection-mapped campaign for their electric car, and showcasing my work with XGIMI at CES 2024. These experiences have been milestones in my journey, and I’m excited to continue pushing the boundaries of art and technology.
I’m currently focused on expanding my installations and launching workshops to help others explore projection art. It’s a thrilling time as I continue to grow my artistic practice and build a community of creatives passionate about the intersection of art and technology.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I believe three qualities have been especially impactful on my artistic journey: discipline, the willingness to ask for help and adapt, and embracing the power of learning—especially through social media. Growing up as a competitive skier, I developed a strong work ethic and discipline, which has carried over into my art career. Consistency and dedication are key to developing any skill, and in the world of art, the same principles apply. It’s not always about waiting for inspiration, but showing up to create every day, even when it feels challenging.
A quality that has shaped my career is the ability to adapt and ask for help when needed. No one succeeds alone, and I’ve learned that having a support system—whether that’s from my parents, my husband, or even my grandmother—has been key to my ability to pursue my creative passions. I also learned this during business school, where one of the most valuable lessons was that you need a team to move forward. Filling your “bus” with the right people allows you to achieve things that you wouldn’t be able to do on your own. As a creative, I don’t hesitate to reach out for advice or seek guidance when faced with challenges. It’s a critical part of growth, and it’s something I encourage everyone to embrace.
Another important part of my development has been embracing the world of social media. It’s easy to feel hesitant about sharing your work online, especially when you’re early in your career. But I can’t stress enough how important it is to post your work, even if it doesn’t feel “perfect” to you. Social media has been one of the most valuable tools for growing my network and audience. I’ve learned that not only is it crucial to share your work regularly, but also to engage with your followers and build a community. People are drawn to authenticity and passion, and when you show your process and your growth, others can connect with that journey.
For those just starting out, my advice is to be consistent with posting and don’t let fear of imperfection hold you back. Share your progress, your experiments, and your mistakes. The more you engage with the world and let them see your creative process, the more opportunities will come your way. The learning and the growing never stop, and social media is an essential part of that journey.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m always open to collaboration! I absolutely love working with other artists, especially those who bring a unique perspective or skill set to the table. As an artist juggling many aspects of my career—creating art and animations, managing projects, and handling marketing—sometimes I need partners who can offer expertise in areas I’m still growing in. Whether you have knowledge in project management, tech, marketing, or something else that complements my work, I’m always eager to connect with people who can help push boundaries and make great things happen.
If you’re someone who thrives on collaboration, whether in art, tech, or anything in between, I’d love to hear from you! You can reach me through email at [email protected] or connect with me on Instagram. Let’s create something amazing together!
