We recently connected with Lucy Liu and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lucy , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I believe confidence is a decision. I truly became the most confident version of myself when I decided that I will be a confident person for the rest of my life and that being less confident will always be temporary.
When I was in middle school, I took acting lessons and signed with a casting agency. Every single time I went to an audition, the casting director would run out, excited that Lucy Liu was on their list, but their disappointment at seeing me instead was obvious.
“Oh, it’s not THE Lucy Liu” is a phrase that continues to ring in my ears decades later, but I love my name, and even decided to keep it after marriage to remind me of that confidence I needed.
Still, the limiting belief of my name—Lucy Liu—stuck with me for years. Someone out there was already exceedingly legendary by that name, so surely I would always be nobody. I thought to myself, you certainly don’t see another famous Julia Roberts or Angelina Jolie out there, right? It just doesn’t happen.
And what’s worse is I absolutely adore the woman people refer to as “THE Lucy Liu”—she is exceptionally talented as an artist, actress, and director. So, while I can’t blame her, I don’t want to sabotage myself either. The struggle was real.
After two decades of personal development, I finally learned to embrace my name and decided that I will make an impact by helping others live their best life and that is all that matters. I will use my confidence to show others that it is possible to live an epic life, dream big and have fun along the way.
And my confidence is not loud, I’m all about calm confidence because I believe confidence is not about decibels. I can be the most quiet person in the room and still be the most confident version of myself.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I facilitate a free live virtual workshop called #IamRemarkable where 100% of past attendees walked away with a confidence boost, feel free to connect with me to get in the next workshop.
When I’m not coaching high achieving women to uplevel their business or life, I’m podcasting and interviewing powerful female experts, author and speakers.
One questions I get asked most often is how did I get to where I am now, living a life full of joy, fullfilment and alignment and my answer to that is because of all the decisions I made in life that added up to living the better life. And that is exactly why I wrote my book Confident & Epic: 21 Decisions To Living Your Best Life available on Amazon.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
After starting my podcast and as I started to tell my life stories on other podcasts, the most common reaction I received was: “wow, you made some bold moves!” Really? These reactions were surprising and interesting to me because it was only then I realized it was these bold moves that shaped who I am today and led me to living the best life I now live by design. It’s fascinating and enlightening when others recognize and appreciate the courageous steps you’ve taken in life. So first off, I want to you make bold moves in life too so that your future self will thank you for later.
Secondly, I wish for you to stop oversthinking and take action. If you ever find yourself thinking about why you keep overthinking everything or suffer from ruminating thoughts, you are not alone. I am also a recovering overthinker and on my own journey to recovering from overthinking. But now I fell in love with helping others overcome overthinking because even if you believe in your dreams and have a plan to achieve your goals, nothing would result from inaction. And always remember taking action is a decision, inaction is a decision, and the choice is yours.
Last but not least, my hope for you is to have more fun. I firmly believe the number one reason why people don’t reach their goals is because they are not having enough fun. I would not have recorded over 200 episodes to my podcast if I wasn’t having fun laughing with each guest. My book would never have come to existence if I didn’t enjoy opening up my Google Documents. Having fun served me as a sustainable source of motivation through slower days and darker times. When you truly enjoy working toward your goals, it becomes much easier to stay active and consistent and helps us maintain the drive we need to overcome inevitable challenges and setbacks.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I think it’s much easier to prevent overwhelm rather than dealing with overwhelm. Which is exactly why I love to teach my clients how to correctly manage their time so they would set realistic goals, focus on the simple joys of life and never have to feel there’s too much on the plate to begin with.
We rid the word overwhelm by attending our own non-negotiable activities first, we must all understand our values and priorities. This way you can crush your goals with clarity and not burnout while designing how you live your life, when you like to attend to your daily activities and who you want to spend your time with.
In the case where a client is overwhelmed, I do feel I have the superpower to expedite the coaching process and quickly remove any mental blocks so to solve the problem. There is no right or wrong answer, it is your life.
