Meet Lucy Walsh

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lucy Walsh. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Lucy, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?

The Director Garry Marshall once said to me, ‘Some days are life and death. If today’s not one of them, it’s a good day.’ That changed my perspective on what it means to have a bad day. So in the moments when I feel defeated, when I’m disappointed, when complaining feels good…I say Garry’s words out loud – and it reminds me that since today is a LIFE day and not a death day, I get to keep moving forward in gratitude.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Do it afraid. Everyone is faking confidence. Don’t be precious about your work – create it, release it, onto the next. You do not need to earn rest. You do not need to earn a peaceful life. You are lovable and worthy of your desires, just as you are. “No” is a complete sentence. Do not allow mediocrity in how you govern your life and work – raise your bar of excellence in how you function and think. Shortcuts make you average, the process makes you exceptional. Excuses make you weak, eliminate them from your vocabulary. The right choice is the one you can stand behind with certainty and pride. Question your beliefs. Do your own research. Do not be a puppet to someone else’s agenda. Remember the child in you, and be your own protector. Be honest with yourself about your desires and intentions. Your feelings are valid. Age is irrelevant – now is the perfect time. Your success is defined by you and only you. Go Big.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

I recently published my first book REMEMBER ME AS HUMAN, so the last several years of finishing it and then the press tour / launch have been incredibly busy. It led me to a mental and physical breakdown, panic attacks, the whole thing. BUT… the meltdown was not because of the busy schedule. A busy schedule can be very manageable and joyful. What caused me to have the burnout was that in the months since the book published, I put enormous pressure on myself to achieve ‘everything all at once’…my ENTIRE life’s vision of my future artistic projects and coaching business expansion, while this book is still ‘hot’. In show business, you’re conditioned to use every project as a launch pad for the next, before the window of relevance and interest closes. It poisons the mind to believe you have to move at a grueling pace.

My body, mind, and spirit sounded the alarm that we needed rest, and I had to enforce an official mental vacation. My body needed three surgeries within just a few months, things that had been a long time coming, and it all escalated at the same time. As much as my ego hated the rest, it seemed impossible to approach the work as I had been for so long, as if there was an invisible force field repelling me from that computer. It felt very scary step away from productivity, but I had no choice. So I waited. It was very uncomfortable.

Then my good friend Polly said something that helped me truly relax, she said, “The work will be there when you’re ready, it’s not going anywhere.” We do not need to earn rest. Feel burnt out? TOOLS DOWN…for an hour, a day, a week, a month, whatever you need. Of course it’s a challenge isn’t it, when we have to work to pay bills, take care of a family, etc…but I guarantee there is SOMETHING small we can do in the course of a day to give ourselves rest; a walk, an episode of our favorite show, a page in our book, a refreshing snack or drink, laying down with your feet up for 15 minutes (my mom’s rest hack), cuddles with an animal, even just gazing at a tree or the sky…these are activities I use to do to slow down, calm down, just be.

As I now tip-toe back towards my next projects and business expansion again, I feel cleaner, not desperate. I’ve been able to see how that the ‘Productive’ disease robs us of life. I don’t ‘need’ to do anything – I am timeless, so are you; therefore we create timeless work, and we do not need to stay relevant. Let us not be controlled by the lie that we have to ride the back of our most recent ‘hot’ project or we’re fucked…just look at Daniel Day Lewis…who comes out of his private life only once in a blue moon to do a single film, yet continues to be the GOAT of his profession. Exactly.
