We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Luis Del Mar a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Luis, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
Being a male makeup artist in a female-dominated industry can be challenging. It’s an environment where men aren’t always welcomed, and the idea of men wearing makeup isn’t universally accepted. To navigate these challenges, I’ve developed a thick skin and resilience. Despite the obstacles, I am committed to representing male Latino makeup artists, even if it means being a beacon of light and a trailblazer in the industry. My goal is to pave the way for others like me and to show that talent and passion know no gender boundaries.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Luis, a 25-year-old Latino beauty content creator based in Palm Springs, CA. On social media, I’m known as @Luisdelmar9, where I share beauty-related content. I’m passionate about empowering my viewers. As a Latino male makeup artist, it’s not always easy, but I am dedicated to representing and inspiring other artists like myself.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Wow, that is a great question! The three key skills I’ve developed that have been crucial to my journey are patience, self-love, and confidence.
By focusing on and strengthening these areas, I felt empowered and ready to take on the world.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
To be fully transparent, I am often my own biggest critic. I tend to self-reject ideas and content or overanalyze everything. I am constantly pushing myself to do better and be better, which sometimes makes me forget all the accomplishments I’ve achieved. My focus on self-improvement can create a sort of tunnel vision.
Recently, I started keeping a “done list,” where I write down all of my accomplishments throughout the year, both big and small. At the end of the year, I review this list to remind myself of everything I have achieved. This practice helps me see that, despite any obstacles, I have persevered and made significant progress.
