Meet Luis Dominguez

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Luis Dominguez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Luis, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?

I get my resilience from my passion for tattooing and the connection I build with my clients. Moving from Spain to Los Angeles to pursue this dream wasn’t easy, but every challenge I’ve faced has made me stronger. What keeps me going is the trust people place in me to create something meaningful on their skin. That responsibility pushes me to stay focused, grow as an artist, and never give up.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m Lewis, a tattoo artist originally from Murcia, Spain, now based in Los Angeles and working at GangatattooLA. My focus is on hyper-realistic black and gray pet portraits — a style that allows me to capture deep emotion and connection between people and their animals. What makes my work special is the level of detail and empathy I bring into every piece. It’s not just about the technique, but about preserving a memory that often means the world to someone.

What excites me most is being able to transform something so personal into permanent art, and seeing the emotional reactions of my clients — it reminds me why I do this. I’ve had the opportunity to work with high-profile clients and tattoo some of them under our exclusive No Pain service, including Offset, Stephon Diggs, Nick Kyrgios, and Odell Beckham Jr. I’ve also served as a judge at major tattoo conventions like Villain Arts across the U.S., which has helped me stay connected to the industry and its evolution.

Right now, I’m focused on continuing to refine my skills in realism and microrealism, expanding my presence at international conventions, and exploring collaborations that challenge me creatively. Every piece I do is part of a bigger journey — not just mine, but my clients’ as well.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, I’d say the three most impactful qualities in my journey have been patience, precision, and a constant desire to grow. Tattooing — especially in the style I specialize in, like realistic pet portraits — requires extreme attention to detail. You can’t rush the process, and patience is what allows you to develop true mastery.

Precision is equally important. Clients trust me to capture something deeply meaningful, and the smallest mistake can change everything. Honing that level of control took years of practice, experimentation, and learning from every piece I’ve done.

Lastly, I’ve never stopped wanting to improve. Even after moving to Los Angeles, working at GangatattooLA, and tattooing well-known clients like Offset, Stephon Diggs, Nick Kyrgios, and Odell Beckham Jr., I still treat every tattoo as an opportunity to get better.

My advice to anyone just starting out is: be patient with your growth, study the techniques obsessively, and surround yourself with artists who challenge and inspire you. Never stop learning — that’s what keeps your art evolving.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

Without a doubt, working at GangatattooLA has played a major role in my growth as an artist. Being surrounded by such a talented team has constantly pushed me to raise my standards, refine my technique, and stay focused on delivering my best work. The environment there is both inspiring and demanding — in the best way possible.

Also, I have to credit my family and close friends back in Spain for always believing in me, especially when I made the decision to move to Los Angeles to pursue my dream. That support gave me the confidence to face the unknown and keep going even during the hardest moments.

The combination of mentorship, community, and self-motivation has been key to helping me overcome challenges and continue evolving as an artist.
