We recently connected with Luis Guerrero and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Luis, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Over the years developing my artistic voice, there has been many works that I have learned from. At first I would be hard on myself if I made mistakes, those same mistakes now inspire new ideas, or styles in which I create in my art works. When I paint now, I approach my work in a head space where mistakes cannot be made, just new challenges and perspectives to learn from. It is less intimidating to make artwork when you feel like you cannot fail.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I create works of art that are abstract, provoke emotion using color, trying to find balance between expressive brushstrokes and defined shapes and lines. Many of these art works are very layered and textured. I create art with a large influence from music and I let my emotions choose the color and direction in my work. I often think that my art works are these little treasure maps into my head. I’ve been privileged to been able to collaborate with some amazing local Portland artist in the past years. I’ve been fortunate to be invited to be a part of a few local pop up art shows in Portland. I continue to look for new collaborations and places I can share my work in the community .
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Something I wish I had learned sooner would be , to not be afraid to make “mistakes”. 99% of the time no one else notices but ourselves when it comes to art. I waste a lot less time now overthinking if something looks wrong or right, as long as I’m happy with it that is all that matters.
Invest in yourself, you first have to take yourself seriously before you can expect others to believe in you. Make time to take care of yourself physically, mentally and spiritually.
Last things I wish someone told me sooner were to make artwork for your authentic self, many times in the past I made art work that I thought others would want. In doing so, I held back from taking more risks in my art work because I was focused on people pleasing. I know the artwork I make now is authentic to myself, if people enjoy my work I am always grateful, I know not everyone will be drawn to my work and I’m okay with that.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Currently looking to partner with small/local businesses to share my artwork with my community. As well as collaborating with other artists who want to challenge their skills in creating new works. If you have a business space that is in need of some art work to liven up and add some more energy feel free to email me at itsluwe@gmail.com
If you are an artist that feels like are styles would fit and want to collaborate
