We recently connected with Luiz Booth and have shared our conversation below.
Luiz, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
Actually, I’m not very optimistic, but I believe I have to do what needs to be done. If I don’t do it, no one will do it for me. There’s no point in dreaming or imagining anything if I don’t get off the couch and put it into action.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Hey! My name is Luiz Booth, I’m from the south of Brazil, and I’ve been living in Canada for a few years now. I’ve been working as a tattoo artist for ten years, but I’m also a painter, illustrator, and drummer. In one way or another, I’ve always stayed in the artistic world, a long and difficult journey, but I’m really happy despite everything. Today, I travel the world doing guest spots at studios and tattoo conventions.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I have a strong sense of critique and I’m demanding when it comes to my work. Nowadays, I have more patience to understand my clients’ side. Although it can often be a mess, I try to organize their ideas and present a clearer, more lasting piece based on their concepts. However, the best advice I can give is: be humble, learn from the mistakes of others, and stay true to yourself and your convictions.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
It happens quite often, actually. In my work, I need to be creative every day, showcasing impactful and emotional pieces. To achieve that, I need to constantly consume references. However, many times, the day just isn’t right for colors, and I’m out of ideas and imagination. So, I try to do simple things, like watching something, reading a book, or playing video games, kind of “disconnecting” from reality, and then slowly returning to the process.
