Meet Lukas Cuman

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Lukas Cuman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Lukas, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Being successful when you’re the only one in the room involves demonstrating professionalism, competence, and resilience. You have to be confident in your knowledge and abilities. Your expertise is what got you into the room, so trust that you belong there. At the same time continue to learn and stay updated with the industry trends.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m Lukas Cuman and I’m a recording and mixing engineer. I was born and raised in Italy and I grew up playing guitar and drums in my hometown. I have always been fascinated by sound, so after graduating from high schoo,l I moved to Milano to attend a recording art program. In Milano is where he fell in love with the technical side of the music industry. Being in control of the sound, from the mic placements to the final levels was mind blowing to me and I finally found what I wanted to build my career in.
I had the opportunity to stay side by side and learn from some of the best Italian producers, composers and engineers.
In 2020 I decided to take the plunge and move to Los Angeles California. When I got here I attended the Musician Institute, I completed with honors the Audio Engineering program and I also became an Avid Pro Tools Certified Operator.
In 2021 when eveything was slowly getting back to normal I started working at Speakeasy recording studio, thanks to Marco Sonzini and Saverio Principini that after a period of internship they pushed me to be the in-house engineer.
The studio is now owned by the biggest Italian rockstar Vasco Rossi and I’ve been engineering for him for more than 2 year. With more than 35 million copies sold he is one of the best-selling Italian singers. His Modena Park 2017 concert is the highest-attended ticketed concert of all time.
I’ve recorded Ultimo, an Italian pop singer-songwriter, winner of the Sanremo Music Festival 2018 in the Newcomers category.
In LA I’ve worked also with a number of successful international artists such as Chance The Rapper, Bebe Rexha, Jeremih, Vic Mensa..

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three skills that were most impactful in my journey are: communication, flexibility and build relationships. You have to communicate your ideas clearly and ensure your contributions are understood. Be open to understand the perspectives of others in the room. Actively listen to their ideas and feedback it’s more important than you think. We are here to provide a service so we need to support and listen. Flexibility: approach challenges with a solution-oriented mindset. Problem solving demonstrates your capability to overcome obstacles.
Last but not least is to develop connections with peers and influencers in your industry. Networking opens doors to opportunities and collaborations. Seek opportunities to collaborate with others in the room. Your teamwork skills enhance your professional reputation.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
In the past 12 months my biggest area of growth has been staying in the room with grammy winner artists, producers and engineers. Being in the room with such talents is very inspiring and you learn so much.
