We recently connected with Luke Asper and have shared our conversation below.
Luke, we are so happy that our community is going to have a chance to learn more about you, your story and hopefully even take in some of the lessons you’ve learned along the way. Let’s start with self-care – what do you do for self-care and has it had any impact on your effectiveness?
As a cinematographer, my days often run 10 to 12 hours on my feet, hauling gear and staying sharp behind the camera. A few years ago, I started realizing how much my performance depends on recovery and how I treat my body outside of work.
I have been using WHOOP for over seven years, and it has completely changed how I plan my schedule. It tracks recovery, strain, and sleep, so I can see when I am pushing too hard or when I actually need rest. Seeing that data helped me connect how I feel to how I perform on set, especially during long shoot weeks.
Recently, I switched to shoes that are custom fit to how I walk and stand, built using an AI scan of my feet. It sounds small, but when you are logging around 15,000 steps a day carrying camera gear, it makes a big difference. Between that and keeping my sleep consistent with WHOOP, I have learned that self-care is not about slowing down. It is about making sure I can keep going at full speed without burning out.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m Luke Asper, a cinematographer based in Dallas, and I run Asper Studios, a production company that creates cinematic stories for brands, artists, and agencies. Over the years I’ve focused on blending storytelling and design with a fast, practical workflow that helps clients stand out both online and on screen.
This year has been an exciting one. I was nominated by the Motor Film Awards, which has given my work international recognition. I also partnered with IAMBIC at their F1 event in Miami, where they launched a new collab. I’ve been a fan of their shoes for a while, and what they do has made a real difference in how I handle long production days on my feet.
I’ve also been working on more narrative projects, including a short film with a local F3 race team and a large-scale Bollywood music video, which was one of the biggest dance productions of its kind in Texas. Each project has pushed me creatively in different ways and reminded me why I love being behind the camera.
At Asper Studios, we continue to grow by helping businesses and creators tell visual stories that connect. Whether it’s commercial, automotive, or film work, my goal is always to create something that lasts beyond the moment it’s captured.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, I think the three most important qualities that shaped my journey have been adaptability, consistency, and curiosity.
Adaptability has probably been the biggest one. In production, no two days are ever the same. Conditions change, schedules shift, and problems show up when you least expect them. Learning to stay calm and find solutions on the fly has kept me moving forward no matter what’s happening around me.
Consistency has been key for building trust and momentum. Whether it’s showing up prepared, delivering edits on time, or keeping the same quality across every project, the long-term results come from doing the small things right over and over again.
Curiosity is what keeps me growing. I’m always asking questions, testing new gear, and studying how others work. It’s what pushes me to learn new techniques and stay ahead in a fast-changing industry.
For anyone just starting out, I’d say don’t wait for the perfect setup or opportunity. Build your skills through real projects, learn from every shoot, and stay open to where the work leads you. The combination of adaptability, consistency, and curiosity will take you a long way.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always open to collaborating with producers and directors who are passionate about storytelling and want to push the look and feel of their projects. My goal is to continue working on more commercial sets, both locally and around the world, as a Director of Photography.
If you’re developing a project and need a DP who’s hands-on with both creative and technical direction, I’d love to connect. The best way to reach me is through my website or Instagram, both are under Luke Asper or Asper Studios.
