We recently connected with Luke & Hannah Sunderland and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Luke & Hannah, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
Whenever our company has experienced hardship or challenges, we view that as an opportunity to learn and grow. This creates a growth mindset that ultimately propels our business forward, rather than fixating on a moment of failure.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
We provide in-home music lessons to families across the Nashville area. From piano to violin to drums, we offer a wide variety of instruments! Harmony Home’s lessons are great for children and adults alike, and we have a passion for developing a love for music in people of all ages!
One thing that makes Harmony Home special is the convenience and comfort that in-home lessons can provide. Our brilliant instructors travel to the student’s home, so that the parents don’t have to get stuck in traffic, and the student can feel comfortable learning in their own space. At Harmony Home, we also focus on fostering a joy and passion for music while avoiding burnout. Our instructors tailor their lessons to each students’ needs, ensuring that they are getting the fundamentals, while also taking the time to foster students’ specific musical interests and genre preferences.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Over the past year, we have learned so many new things about how to run a business and the skills that it takes to do so. Here are 3 important qualities/skills that we have found most helpful in this journey:
1) Stewarding Finances: Being able to have basic financial literacy is important. We have grown our business with zero debt and have grown at the rate of cash flow. Being intentional with every dollar is key! We want to steward the money that we have been given well in a way that sustains Harmony Home and making it thrive, while being able to best serve the community around us.
2) Marketing: We have learned so much about marketing over the past year. If people don’t know about you, they won’t see the need for what you’re offering. This was something we have done a lot of research in and found that the hard work pays off! There are an endless amount of marketing strategies out there. Some of our strategies have been more trial-and-error based. You have to find what works for you!
3) Our Why: Having a larger vision and a ‘why’ behind your business is crucial to keep you motivated. We love what we do, which helps us to push us whenever we face difficult days or weeks.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
We have dove into so many great books and podcasts that have impacted the development of Harmony Home. One that will always stand out to us is The E-Myth by Michael Gerber. The main point of the book is to have the mindset of working on your business rather than working in your business. This has brought us clarity as we continue to develop systems and operations when it comes to daily problems our company faces.
