Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back over the last year, I’ve learned a lot about working together on films. One big project, ‘7 Flames Till Death: The Pit and the Pendulum,’ with Sukavision, taught me a bunch about teamwork in moviemaking. Sukavision is a cool company based in South West Michigan, and we also do stuff in Chicago. I’m Luke Ring, one of the people who started Sukavision, and I’m excited to tell you about our adventures in making films.

Working on projects like these has been a journey. It started in South West Michigan, where we are from, and took us all the way to Chicago, a big city with lots of opportunities. Being part of Sukavision has shown me how important it is to have different points of view when making movies. The places we work in, like Michigan and Chicago, influence our work and make it unique.

Collaborating with others is crucial in filmmaking. It’s not just about knowing how to tell a good story or using fancy camera skills. It’s about getting a team together, each person bringing their own talents to create something amazing. This way, a movie becomes more than just scenes; it becomes a masterpiece. This way of working has not only improved my own filmmaking but also made Sukavision better as a whole.

I love learning new things, and working together with a team has been both challenging and rewarding. It’s a skill that every filmmaker should have, especially in an industry like ours. Looking ahead, I’m excited to use this teamwork approach in our upcoming projects at Sukavision. We want to keep pushing boundaries and making awesome stuff.

Here are some photos from our filmmaking journey. They show the fun and hard work we put into making movies. Each picture is a part of Sukavision, showing our dedication to creativity and making stories that matter.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
First and foremost, creative storytelling has been the cornerstone. Capturing and translating unique narratives into film, especially for projects like ‘7 Flames Till Death: The Pit and the Pendulum’, required a deep connection with the art of storytelling. This is something I believe every aspiring filmmaker should immerse themselves in – understanding the dynamics of a compelling story is essential.

Secondly, technical expertise in film production has played a crucial role. Being adept in cinematography, editing, and overall production management is vital in bringing a vision to life on screen. This is a skill set that I’ve honed over the years, and I encourage upcoming filmmakers to invest time in mastering these technical aspects.

Lastly, the ability to collaborate effectively has been fundamental. Filmmaking is a collective endeavor, and understanding how to work cohesively with a team, including talents from diverse backgrounds in South West Michigan and Chicago, is crucial. I’ve learned that fostering a collaborative environment where every member’s contribution is valued leads to the creation of truly impactful films.

These three elements – storytelling, technical mastery, and collaboration – are what I attribute Sukavision’s success to. They are not just skills but pillars that uphold the essence of what it means to be a filmmaker. For those beginning their journey, focusing on these areas will not only enhance your craft but also prepare you for the diverse challenges and opportunities in the film industry.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Reflecting on the past 12 months, my most significant area of growth has been in enhancing my skills in collaborative filmmaking. Working on projects like ‘7 Flames Till Death: The Pit and the Pendulum’ with Sukavision has deepened my appreciation for the dynamics of teamwork in the film industry. This journey, rooted in South West Michigan and extending to Chicago, has taught me the value of diverse perspectives and the power of collective creativity in filmmaking.

I’ve learned that while individual skills like storytelling and technical expertise are crucial, the ability to bring together a team, harnessing each member’s unique talents towards a shared vision, is what truly elevates a film. This growth in understanding and fostering effective collaboration has not only improved my work as a filmmaker but has also enriched the creative output of Sukavision as a whole.

As someone who values continuous learning, this focus on collaborative excellence has been both a challenge and a reward. It’s a skill that I believe is essential for any filmmaker, especially in an industry that is as dynamic and team-oriented as ours. Looking ahead, I’m excited to apply this enhanced collaborative approach to future projects, pushing the boundaries of what we can achieve at Sukavision.
