Meet Luke Sutton

We were lucky to catch up with Luke Sutton recently and have shared our conversation below.

Luke, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
I started as a background actor in 2016 and got the acting bug. I was in a few student films and watched what was going on, taking notes. I wasn’t getting the roles I wanted, so I created my content. I started writing and then producing while still trying to act. Trying to be diversified in my approach allows the creativity to come out. Watching movies, reading some of my textbooks from film school, and attending film festivals to see where we fit in has helped dramatically. I guess being a student and not always thinking I’m a teacher.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a filmmaker and content creator. I just finished my Master of Arts in Film & Television and am developing a few projects. Although I am a filmmaker and content creator, I still love acting. SciCo Productions started during film school in 2020 and was initially for sci-fi projects. However, I find myself doing other genres. I have learned so much over the last three years by producing projects and working with many extraordinary talents.
My goal is to keep creating. We’ve produced several short films, and I look forward to creating the feature film projects in development.
Making content involves so many people. As I mentioned, I’ve worked with many talented folks on this journey. Seeing the final product is such a tremendous feeling of accomplishment.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Confidence – I played sports growing up and have played competitively up until the Pandemic. I knew I wouldn’t play competitive sports forever and quit because of acting since I didn’t want to get hurt. I think sports kept me in check growing up as far as probably not getting involved in some things, but there were some successes I took away from that. Every step you complete brings you closer to where you want to be. 2. Determination – Keep going, and don’t let anything stop you from where you want to go. I worked in sales for over ten years, and the number of no’s I received is vastly more significant than the yes’s. No doesn’t mean never; it just means no this second.
3. Team mentality – Keeping an open mind and having a sense of team is essential. It’s easier and more gratifying to do something in life with help, and film and entertainment is the same. Don’t be afraid to learn from each other.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
There are several books that I like to refer to in the entertainment industry. 1. History of Narrative Film by David Cook – great perspective on where we’ve been and how far we’ve come in film.
2. Producer to Producer by Maureen A Ryan – a great guide to low-budget indie film producing.
3. Story by Robert McKee – for obvious reasons.
4. Save The Cat by Blake Snyder – for the screenwriter.
5. The Screenwriter’s Bible by David Trottier – helps with screenplay structure.
6. Creating Unforgettable Characters by Linda Seger
7. Directing by Michael Rabiger and Mick Hurbis-Cherrier
Just to name a few..
