We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Luke Thayer. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Luke below.

Luke , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

Whew, what a question! I believe in something I call the “confidence tank.” Just a like a hot water tank at your home, you need it full to have a nice hot shower. Ok, maybe the analogy took a weird turn there, but the point is you need a full tank. How does one get a full confidence tank? By doing things that make one feel good about one’s self. So, in a less pretentious way of saying that: do things that make you feel good about yourself, and stop doing things that make you feel bad about yourself. I started performing at places that appreciated me and what I do, and stopped performing places where I wasn’t valued.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am stand-up comedian! What does that actually mean? I perform stand-up comedy in front of live audiences around the country often, and sometimes around the world. My job is to make people laugh. I can also be seen on multiple comedy specials, heard on SiriusXM, and on social media. I’m always, always working on something new. I’m currently working on my next special and album, so follow me for updates on that, as well as knowing when I’m coming to your city. I also have begun comedy coaching, consulting, and teaching.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Fill the confidence tank is number 1. Also, find your passion in the process. Do you LOVE what you’re doing? I LOVE comedy. I LOVE comedians. I LOVE the process, the grittiness, the venues, the clubs, the audiences. I LOVE it all, and feel that passion every day. That doesn’t mean things aren’t hard, but it makes it possible to persevere through those difficulties that are sure to come.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?

Challenges will join us on our journey no matter what point on that road we are currently. Right now, I’m a really good stand-up comedian. Sometimes that isn’t enough though, and I’m dealing with some of the disappointments of not getting everything I had hoped, including things that have been promised to me by very high up people in the entertainment industry. That doesn’t mean I give up, but some of those breaks that we all need, seem a little out of grasp at the moment.
