Meet Lulu Buck

We recently connected with Lulu Buck and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Lulu, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

As an author, I don’t believe imposter syndrome ever fully goes away, but I’ve learned how to manage it. There are moments when I have to consciously remind myself that I do belong in certain circles, that my voice matters, and that my work has earned its place. One of the biggest tools I’ve found helpful is doing thorough research. I’m constantly looking up things. When I take the time to really immerse myself in a subject, I feel more grounded and confident. Having a deep ocean of knowledge to draw from gives me a sense of confidence and that I’ve got this, which helps quiet that inner critic. I think we all have to tell that little negative voice in us to “be quiet!”

Over time, as I’ve continued to find success and see how my work resonates with kids. I’ve begun to shed more and more of that self-doubt. Every accomplishment, every piece of positive feedback, and every meaningful connection I make reinforces the idea that I’m not an imposter. I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. It’s a process, but I’m getting there. It also helps that I LOVE being a children’s book author and that I want to succeed in this part of my life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I’m so excited to share that I released a new book this past fall, Magical Golden Whistle! This story has quickly become one of my absolute favorites to read aloud to children. It’s full of wonder, adventure, and imagination.

The story follows a curious little boy who lives in the forest. One day, while racing handmade boats down a river, he spots something shiny glinting in the river. Intrigued, he goes to investigate and discovers a golden whistle. When he blows it three times, something incredible happens. A magical flying horse appears, swooping down from the sky to whisk him away on an unforgettable journey through the forest.

Sharing this book with kids has been such a joyful experience. At every event, I’m amazed by their wide-eyed wonder and the stories they come up with when I ask, “What would you do if you found a magical whistle?” Their creativity knows no bounds, and it’s truly magical to witness their imaginations take flight.

Bringing this story to life has brought so much joy and magic into my life as well. I feel incredibly grateful to be able to share these moments with young readers and to inspire their sense of adventure and possibility.

In addition to the new book I work very hard to bring joy to kids through my other books, keynotes and lessons.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, these three qualities have been most impactful in my journey as a children’s book author:

1. Courage to Just Jump In:
One of the most important things I did was simply start. I didn’t wait until everything was perfect or until I had all the answers. If I did, I still wouldn’t have started. I just jumped in and committed to this journey. That courage to begin, even in the face of uncertainty, was essential. For anyone early in their journey, my advice is: don’t let fear or perfectionism hold you back. Start where you are, with what you have, and trust that you’ll learn and grow along the way.

2. Doing the Research:
Once I was in it, I quickly realized how important it was to do my homework. Whether it’s understanding the self-publishing process, marketing strategies, or the inner workings of the traditional publishing world, knowledge truly is power. I encourage new authors to take the time to research both self-publishing and traditional publishing. Understand the pros and cons of each path so you can make an informed decision that aligns with your goals, values, and resources. I chose to be self-published because at the time I published, we were in the middle of a pandemic.

3. Trusting Myself and My Vision:
There will always be outside voices, some encouraging, some critical, but learning to trust my own creative voice and instincts was a turning point. No one else has your exact story, your exact perspective, or your unique way of reaching readers. For those starting out, I’d say: stay grounded in your why. Believe in your message and your ability to learn what you need as you go. Confidence builds with each step you take, and trusting yourself is what will keep you going through the inevitable highs and lows. Someone I admire very much once said to me, “Take advice from the people whose lives you admire and would want for yourself,”

Ultimately, there’s no one “right” way to be an author. But if you lead with curiosity, stay open to learning, and trust your creative spark, you’ll find your path and your audience.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Yes, I’m absolutely open to collaborating and would love to connect with others in the creative and publishing space. I’m especially interested in partnering with fellow authors, whether you’re just starting out or have several books under your belt. I truly believe there’s so much power in exchanging ideas, sharing writing tips, and supporting one another through the often solitary process of storytelling. I’d love to brainstorm, co-host events, or even explore joint projects that inspire young readers.

I’m also very open to collaborating with marketing professionals who have a passion for children’s literature and creative content. Navigating the world of book promotion, especially as an independent author, can be overwhelming at times, so I welcome any opportunity to work with those who bring fresh ideas, strategic thinking, or experience in reaching broader audiences in meaningful ways.

If you’re reading this and feel a spark of interest, I’d love to hear from you! You can connect with me through my website, social media, or email. Let’s explore how we might create something magical together.
