We recently connected with Luna Harley and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Luna, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
There have been moments throughout my musical and writing journey where I’ve doubted myself—my skills, most of all.
In 2017, I began making music as Luna Harley. I was so happy to finally be able to showcase my self-taught skills in music. But it was daunting. I doubted whether everything I had learned up to that point was any good. This feeling was especially present when I tried composing my first EP, Citrus Afternoon. I was writing song after song, but I deemed them all “not good enough”—but what really is “not good enough?”
I unraveled my writer’s block in that moment by reminding myself that music—and art—is a form of expression. It’s not here to conform or be perfect. I am here to share a story, to make myself and the listener feel an emotion and a connection. If you genuinely love what you’re making, if you feel emotions while you’re creating your project, then you’ve got it. The skills you teach yourself along the way are incredibly valuable tools to make your visions tangible, but feeling and soul are just as important in the creative process.
Also, try to relax. It’s rare to be amazing on the first try in your first year. If you keep going and save your progress, your future self will be proud of everything you’ve accomplished. Perseverance is the key to overcoming writer’s block.
I still slip into phases where I grapple with writer’s block. However, to avoid losing momentum, I continue. I may write in a separate document from the original project file or handwrite it in a notebook—but I don’t remove or delete it. As a popular saying goes: you can always edit a paragraph of text, but you cannot edit a blank page.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a writer first and foremost, then a musician! I’ve been creating music as Luna Harley since 2017. Over the course of several years, I’ve made four EPs, entitled “Citrus Afternoon”, “Planetarium”, “Water for Roses”, and “Worlds Within a Dream”, as well as one album, “Rare Novels”.
My second album, “Unearth Eternity”, will be out soon on 2 May! It’s a collection of eight songs with an emphasis on lyrics and piano/electric guitar balladry. I love creating worlds within my music that feel cinematic and atmospheric—like you can read or listen to it like a book and feel as though you’ve been on a character arc’s journey as you move through the discography.
What my listeners don’t know is that I’ve been quietly writing a debut novel, which I hope to self-publish next year, in 2026—also as an audiobook! It’s a story of two characters who have both suffered a loss. They unexpectedly cross paths and hope to teach one another how to see the beauty & love of life again. Writing a novel has been a lifelong dream of mine. I made a promise to my grandfather, who was an author, that I would write and publish a novel—and that has been my life’s goal ever since.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the curiosity and drive to explore the things that inspire me—to unravel the things my body keeps score of. I believe creative outlets are the most beautiful and everlasting ways to showcase the deepest parts of your heart. Within us, we carry so many precious things: emotions, experiences, feelings, memories, dreams, aspirations, and more. Whenever we feel inspired, we take these parts of ourselves and expand on these in ways that transcend our inner-world. It becomes a powerful way to connect with others.
My advice for someone who’s early in their journey: create what speaks to your heart. Don’t feel disheartened—especially in the early years of your creative path. This is not a race; you are a person who lives within your own time zone. Keep a space for yourself where you chronicle your work. There’s always time to learn a new skill—if it helps you express your vision more clearly, then it’s worth it. Also, know your worth when people come around.
And last but not least: have fun. Art is your expression, your interpretation of the world. Enrich it.
Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Something I haven’t quite shared is that I live with generalized anxiety disorder. It’s a diagnosis I had been searching for since I was a child. Now I finally feel like the things that go on inside my brain have a cause—and that I can begin to take control of it. I’m currently in treatment to learn ways to manage my symptoms. I already see improvements, but it’s a slow but gradual process.
For anyone in the same boat: I see you, and I share your frustrations. Beyond your thoughts, there’s a brave and strong human getting through the motions of the day. What helps me is reminding myself to breathe deeply, to keep a journal of positive happenings (even small moments—like seeing a cat on the street—are big wins!), and to remember that there are people out there who love you.
