We recently connected with Lydia Bagarozza and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lydia, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is sneaky. I didn’t think that I had it until I started my own PR agency a few years back. Understanding that I was the only person to report to or be the authority, I had to realize that I was “it.” I was the talent for my business.
It was also helpful for me to self reflect on my accomplishments. I’ve worked with some of the world’s top musicians, lifestyle, beauty, and personal brands, and am responsible for over 4,000 pieces of top tier press floating around on the internet.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am Lydia Bagarozza, the Publicist and CEO of a boutique PR agency. I am also the cofounder of a media training school for entrepreneurs called, Visibility on Purpose. For over a decade, I have dedicated my career to helping brands earn the recognition that they deserve through organic media exposure.
One of the main reasons I went into business for myself was the realization that a lot of the bigger agencies don’t take the time to understand their clients. This typically generated disappointing results. I’m not only passionate about utilizing my PR skills to earn valuable, impactful and aligned press features, but I take pride in seamlessly integrating as a valuable part of my clients’ teams.
My boutique PR agency and media training school works with brands in the lifestyle, health & wellness, business, real estate, and beauty industries. Our clients have been featured on media giants like: Oprah, mindbodygreen, Business Insider, Well+Good, Forbes, Apartment Therapy, Nylon, New York Post, Women’s Health, and top podcasts.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three qualities that have made a huge impact on my journey are: Creativity – Anyone with a marketing, sales, or communications degree could ‘probably’ be a mediocre publicist, but what makes a great publicist is the ability to be creative. I have been told many times before that the way I pitch my clients and the story angles that I come up with are truly unique. I love being able to highlight my clients in fresh, fun, and impactful ways that let their brands shine.
Resilience – I have learned early on that if I was going to succeed in entrepreneurship, I had to be resilient. Just because something feels like it’s not working right now, doesn’t mean that it won’t work eventually. Trusting the process, is everything.
Saying “no” – This is the most powerful tool, skill, and quality that has helped me grow as a business owner and authority. By saying no to certain expectations or projects, I am able to stay in my zone of genius. This is what has helped me evolve into who I am today.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Overwhelm is something that I’ve struggled with throughout my life. I love being productive, but over-productivity comes at a price. When I’m overwhelmed, the best thing for me to do is to walk away! Even if I feel like checking one more task off my list is the remedy to feeling better. Instead, I like to go for walks, get lunch with friends, go to yoga, or just simply remove myself from any work situation.
