We recently connected with Lydia Moses and have shared our conversation below.
Lydia, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
I started my own health and fitness journey in 2009 as a way to help me stop smoking. After just doing cardio, I got up the guts to incorporate weight training even though this was something I didn’t see a lot of women doing at the time. I learned a few basic exercises by watching what others did. Once I started lifting weights, I loved how strong and capable it made me feel and how it helped me gain confidence in and out of the gym.
As time went on, strangers began to ask for my help at the gym. Being asked for help felt amazing but I felt like I couldn’t because I wasn’t really sure I knew what I was doing. This is when I first started to consider becoming a certified personal trainer. More time passed and even though I felt unsure about myself, I could not stop thinking that helping people learn to love their themselves and their bodies through exercise was my true calling. So, finally, I pushed myself and obtained certification in February 2020.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
As a certified personal trainer and nutrition coach, I provide fitness, nutrition, and mindset coaching – both in person and online via my app, The MoveFit Method. What’s been so special about getting into this field is watching people not only change their bodies but their minds and lives. People think fitness is just physical, but it has proven to be so much more than that.
My mission as a coach is to help ALL people (because fitness is for EVERYBODY) learn to love and appreciate their bodies through all movement and to teach them the tools and habits they need to build muscle and become their most confident selves – without crazy restrictions. You’ll never hear me say foods are “good” or “bad” or make someone feel bad for missing a workout – this type of coaching fosters a negative relationship with food and exercise which is what I help clients unlearn by showing that living an active and healthy lifestyle isn’t all or nothing and how it can be maintained long term without crash diets, etc.
Right now, I’m working on a few exciting things that I will launch over the next month or two including a free webinar and a free Fall fitness challenge. I did a Summer fitness challenge that was a lot of fun! You can see from the flyer for it that I like to bring that to my coaching. I’m also making efforts to meet and collaborate with other local trainers and fitness enthusiasts to further my mission of inclusivity and fitness for all. Anyone who is interested in collaborating should reach out to me by DM on Instagram or email.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
What made the most impact in my journey was changing my mindset by using positive affirmations and meditation. In the beginning of my journey, I had a lot of self doubt and felt like an imposter because I’m not the leanest or most muscular. I don’t look like all the popular fitness influencers so I was scared that people would think I’m not “fit” enough to train others. But, nobody ever said this to me and I know deep down I possess all the skills and knowledge to change lives. So, I stopped comparing myself and my journey to others, I started to welcome new experiences and possibilities, and kept pushing forward even when things got tough. Regardless of the goal or journey, that’s my advice for anyone. Your journey is yours and yours alone…believe in yourself and make it count.
As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?
I love to read so there are a few! However, the most impactful would probably be “Breaking The Habit of Being Yourself: How to Lose Your Mind and Create a New One” by Dr. Joe Dispenza. It is an amazing book that teaches you how to reprogram your thinking and break the habit of “being yourself” so you can create the life you want to live. The most valuable nugget of wisdom is that by shifting your consciousness and energy, you can create a new reality for yourself and step into the full potential of your being. You can’t create a new outcome if you keep thinking and doing the same things over and over. Dr. Dispenza says, “The hardest part about change is not making the same choices you made the day before.” This reminds me to always question and push myself to level up and act as if I already have everything I want. I realize this way of thinking might seem a little out there, but I encourage everyone to give it a shot because you never know what could change your life.
