We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lyndsey Morgan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lyndsey , thank you so much for agreeing to open up about a sensitive and personal topic like being fired or laid-off. Unfortunately, there has been a rise in layoffs recently and so your insight and experience with overcoming being let go is relevant to so many in the community.
Before the pandemic, I never had a clear career path to follow. I kept an open mind, tried lots of things but none of them ever felt right. Each new place was fine for a few years and then boredom would set in. Job after job left me feeling uninspired, unfulfilled and a bit lost. Where do I go from here? is a question I would ask myself daily during another monotonous commute to the office. Fast forward to 2020 and a few months into the pandemic, I lost my job during a mass layoff. To say I was stressed would be an absolute understatement. Jobs were scarce and the market was flooded with competition. I submitted application after application with zero luck. I didn’t know it at the time but I was about to be presented with an opportunity that would change the course of my life.
In May of 2020 a good friend of mine offered me a job organizing for NEAT Method. Suddenly with everyone stuck inside, homes became offices, classrooms and gyms. Business was booming and she needed major help. “You would be absolutely perfect for this job” she said. With no other prospects on the horizon, I jumped at the offer. A month into organizing and I felt like I was finally getting to put my type-A, detail oriented, personally to full use. By this time, I was already leading the team during projects, taking client consultations and bidding new projects. This was a job I knew I could do really well. Everyday was something new, somewhere new and most importantly NOT BORING!
A few months into my employment, my friend was offered a position with our NEAT corporate team. She accepted and started making plans to sell her market. Little did I know, the plan was to sell it to me. She pitched me said plan and immediate panic set in. Me, a business owner? What? How? Can I do this? Question after question raced through my mind in seconds. But then, after hearing her out, my mindset slowly started to change. Could I actually do this? She seems to think I can. Could this be the career I was always longing for? An opportunity to do my own thing, set my own hours, be the boss I never had. After thinking it over, I was convinced and I took the leap.
I am now 3 years into owning my business and it is the best decision I ever could have made. In helping my clients discover the joy of living an organized life, I have discovered a joy of my own. I have found that elusive balance between work and life. I have been able to build a wonderful team that allows me to be the kind of boss I never had and I have created the NEAT life that I always wanted.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
NEAT Method is a lifestyle service committed to providing a more luxurious and smartly appointed living space. We are here to help you transform your cluttered and disorganized space into a functional and aesthetically pleasing environment. The function of a home should be the foundation of how one lives. We believe that once your home is NEAT and well-arranged, you will feel the positive impact in all areas of your life.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Confidence. Even if you don’t know the answer. Nod, say yes and believe enough in yourself that you will figure it out!
Leadership skills. Years of working for other people taught me what not to do. I always strive to approach my team with kindness, reason and understanding.
Attention to detail. This particular skill has been a huge asset to my career especially once I started NEAT. Noticing every detail and making each one of them perfect, helps create the beautiful end results that my clients appreciate.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
We love to collaborate! During large scale projects, we are always working alongside real estate agents, movers, interior designers and contractors. My clients frequently ask for vendor recommendations so I am always on the hunt for the best of the best! My goal is to curate a network of go-to vendors that I trust for all of my clients needs.
