Meet Lynn Chen

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lynn Chen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Lynn, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

Confidence and self-esteem was something I battled a lot with during most of my childhood and young adult life. If you knew me in middle school and high school, you would have known that I was oftentimes depressed and down on myself.

Growing up I had a pretty strict mother and she wanted me to be a stellar student. Many times when I didn’t get a score below an A, she would be very critical of me so I would feel incredibly inadequate. I was always striving to achieve perfection and that didn’t help my confidence because I would ultimately fail to meet her expectations.

It wasn’t until I started knowing my identity in Christ that I started understanding who I am. My identity wasn’t in pleasing my mom or in pleasing everyone else around me. My identity is in being a child of God and that changed my whole perspective! God’s love and acceptance gave me what I needed to grow in self esteem and how I fit in this world!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I never intended to do music.

You could say I had a love of music at a young age and was always clinging to lyrics in songs but I never believed that music was my life’s destiny.

Having been raised in a Taiwanese household, my mom was strict with grades and always wanted me to have straight As. Although she let me have piano lessons and some art lessons, it wasn’t encouraged to pursue the arts as a career.

Middle school were the hardest years for me because I had just immigrated from the Marshall Islands to the US. I was bullied and didn’t feel much love at home or at school.

I never felt so alone or isolated in my whole life until I went to church. I was struggling with depression and suicide ideation. I even went onstage and told people in the church that I wanted to kill myself. However, it was then that someone came to me and said that God loved me; which changed everything.

Though still struggling in high school, I had a newfound identity. I started playing guitar and singing. I fell in love with connecting with the audience and encouraging people on a weekly basis with music.

Freedom Heart is the embodiment of that passion. The songs that I write and release are songs that convey the hardships and the challenges that I’ve endured. They are artistic expressions of the pain and healing that I have experienced.

I have now taken music as my life’s calling to help people all across the world. Because my life has been healed, it is my heart for others to be healed as well.

Whether through large arenas, small gatherings, online or in person, I look forward to engaging, encouraging, and bringing you to freedom!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Three most important qualities most impactful for my journey are:

1. Openness – always be open to learning, receiving and going to places you’re not entirely familiar with. You might not know where that lesson or opportunity will lead you!

2. Having Faith – it is crucial to stand for what you believe in and not let other people tell you otherwise!

3. Knowing Your Purpose – Though this takes a process, it is so important to find your purpose and focus on that. Do not compromise and the reward that follows will be priceless.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I’m looking for likeminded individuals that would like to collaborate with me in helping and encouraging others!

Whether it’s festivals, workshops or conferences, I am open to doing things a little bit differently! No idea is too. crazy or out of the box!

Let’s be bold together!
