Meet Lynn Odhiambo

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Lynn Odhiambo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Lynn below.

Hi Lynn, so happy to have you with us today and there is so much we want to ask you about. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others developed certain skills or qualities that we are struggling with can be helpful. Along those lines, we’d love to hear from you about how you developed your ability to take risk?

I unintentionally went viral for cooking in my dorm my senior year, about to graduate. Some parents called my univeristy to get me expelled Claiming how I was cooking with my mini appliances, was a hazard to other students and dorm safety. Which housing rendered False and my RA said my mini appliances were within code and not a fire hazard. I in fact, did not get expelled and graduated. Was I scared? absolutely, i’ve worked four years to earn both my degrees only for social media to take my hard work away? absolutely not. That was my thought process at the time till I chose to purse being a content creator full time instead of working a 9-5. It was a risk I was willing to take and despite what people may think, I did not let my degrees go to waste. My BS in Management came in handy as an entrepreneur managing myself and networking. While my BA in sociological & anthropology helped with my willingness to learn about different cultures through my audience around the world. There’s always a silver lining. For me, it was posting my content despite the threats I was getting and then choosing to pursue social media full-time and take full advantage of the opportunity I was given to influence at the current moment. I would never be where I am today if I never took that risk. It’s funny how right after I made that decision the first AD I got on my phone was Nike “just do it” and since then that’s what I go by

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Fun fact: I am originally from Kenya and get questioned a lot why I don’t speak in most of my videos. I Have a speech impediment and think in both English and Swahili which means having to choose my words carefully, so I just choose not to speak at all in my videos since my mannerisms speak for myself. Now I’ve grown as a creator and working with brands does entail speaking for partnerships so I’ve had to break that shell haha. It’s is a challenge just to talking in my videos but it does get easier the more I post. I found out I Unintentionally did ASMR content and enjoy watching similar content myself.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Taking risks – I couldn’t put myself in a niche so I did it all. Whether it was cooking, traveling, dancing, showcasing my fur baby, I found my audience within all forms of my lifestyle

Staying true to myself, morals and beliefs has gotten me to where I am now both in my personal and social life. I will always stand up for what I believe in and not giving into peer pressure on and off-line. It’s very easy to be influenced by anyone or anything, but having an anchor whether it’s a friend, family, doing something you love will keep you grounded and humble resulting in staying true to yourself.

My willingness to learn Is what led to my growth as a creator. It gave me the ability to network, avoid burnouts, and be strategic with my content.

Being a content creator can be very intimidating in the beginning. Everyone in a different niche is telling you how to be a content creator, what your rate should be, and ways to grow as a creator when in reality, every creator is unique and their own way. Your audience will find you, it may take time or a random post that makes you go viral. Bottom line, whatever makes you unique is what will draw your audience to you, and build a loyal following. Do what works for you, For me, strategizing content is not my strong suit, but pressing the record button and come up with ideas as I go is my strong suit. Sometimes it’s Nike “Just do it” depending on your niche of course like news content.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

My mutuals. Too many to name but a majority have been in the game way longer than me and it’s always nice to look up to them for advice. I have made genuine friendships from being mutuals that I call my friends. They have helped me navigate being a creator, develop networking skills, and know my worth as a creator.
