Meet M A L U

We recently connected with M A L U and have shared our conversation below.

Hi M A L U, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

I believe it is my passion for music that comes from within since I was born. I started noticing that I had a passion for playing violin and piano , then composing, and then producing electronic music. I soon realized that not a lot of people understood the importance I had for it, as to make it my career, as it is not a very popular career. I realized that I had to be creative and have the walk alone. I usually was looking at successful musicians, and I tried to imitate them in my own way. On the other hand, I am a woman, and I felt that it made it hard to be respected and considered for work positions. I only had to keep on saying to myself, “I can do this I just need to be more prepared and have more experience.” Furthermore, I have ADHD, and that has such a detour on doing things, and I could not do exactly what others did, so I had to find a way that worked for me.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I started learning music when I was very young, and I learned violin, piano, and voice and started conducting orchestras as my job. I had performed in different music genres, classical and pop music, but it was in 2015 that I started producing electronic music and playing my violin. I felt that this opened a new door for me, as it is something that I am very passionate about. I start giving concerts locally in San Diego/Tijuana. Then I start playing in LA, then Chicago, then NY , Mexico , then Canada, and finally I start touring Europe and then Asia. It has been amazing the last few years. I still have my orchestras from time to time that really makes me happy. One of my peak moments in my career was when I was commissioned to compose the music for Portrait video of a Nation Honoree 2022, Dr. Anthony Fauci, at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. Furthermore, I was selected for 2024 World Capital Design to compose Concerto for American and Mexican Violin and Electronica.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think persistence, as I had to plan what I was going to play, and then I practiced and practiced even when things did not go my way , I kept on doing it. Self-understanding, as I knew I did not think or was like other people, as an example, was sitting still for a lot of time or getting extremely impatient as to wait my turn at the store. I know what makes me happy, so I always try to balance what is hard for me with things that I like a lot. An example is if I work so hard to make a project, I will give myself 10 hours to sleep no matter what. I call them prizes. Also, being friendly and open, I notice that great projects come with ideas of friends, and all of us make it real in community.

How would you spend the next decade if you somehow knew that it was your last?

I will be doing exactly what I’m doing: practicing music, violin, piano, and orchestra, and composing and producing music. I think it is a purpose of life. I might speed up the process as an emergency, but I will be creating more music and collaborating more, just faster, as I know I only have so little time.
