Meet Mackenzie Hendrock

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mackenzie Hendrock. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Mackenzie, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
From a young age, I’ve always liked to write, journal and draw, but remembering when I put a purpose behind calligraphy was simple. I loved doing it, like really LOVED it; the technique, the equipment, the community, the art and the reason for creating – it was magic. And it still is every day with every project I create.

My purpose is to create custom calligraphy that celebrates YOU! From weddings to baby showers to decor that tells a story, I think remembering life’s golden moments should be celebrated. I feel joy when clients receive their final products and value the design and detail I brought to their event. The overwhelming pride I have in loving what I do and creating something that means something to someone else so much is endless.

I understand that parties, events and weddings are a luxury, so sometimes calligraphy doesn’t fall under someone’s budget – and that’s okay! I find passion in what I do and I know that transcends to purpose because the clients that find you really understand the value I bring to their events. Details last a lifetime and your guests will remember your events if you give them a reason to.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Mackenzie Hendrock and I am the owner and lead calligrapher at Hendrock Handmade Calligraphy. I specialize in day-of wedding signage and paper accent details creating everything from welcome signs, seating charts and bar signage to table numbers, place cards and vow books – every little detail that matters.

I’m a Midwesterner turned Texan who loves live music, traveling, Disney and desserts! I love thinking out of the box and creating something new that matches my client’s personalities, while giving them something they love. The most special part is that nothing I create is ever the same!

When you work with Hendrock Handmade, you’re working with your own hype woman who will be just as excited about your event as you are. We’re here to help you shine, and we love finding ways to do that as fun and “you” as possible. We can create custom signage and paper accents, or be as flexible to work within the rental items we have for your event. Our rental items include: welcome signage, mirrors and stands for large signage like seating charts, table numbers and other small signage (bar signage, guest book signs, cards and gifts, etc.).

We’re also excited to take on a new skill soon – learning how to engrave items, so we can expand our portfolio and offer additional services for our clients. Stay tuned to see more!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Heart: being all-in on your business and your passion, but knowing that you’re working with people and they matter. Having kindness and sharing yourself with clients or colleagues will create a more genuine relationship that will take you farther in your business.

Dedication: there’s no giving up! Even if you’re a team of one (like me!), there is always a way. Find your niche, get to know them, research the heck out of everything and grind until you’re confident. Throw ‘imposter syndrome’ out the window and believe in yourself. It takes a lot of blood, sweat and tears to make something you’re proud of.

Asking for Help: Don’t be too prideful or too bashful to ask for help. The calligraphy community is so generous, but I would have never known if I didn’t send a message on Instagram to learn more about other creators… who are now my friends! Find a mentor and invest in yourself and you won’t regret it.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
My ideal client is someone who values calligraphy, appreciates my style and understands to give their vendors some freedom – that’s when the magic comes alive!

They are passionate and want their guests to have an incredible time (all about creating core memories over here!).
