Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mackenzie Lyons. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Mackenzie, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
When I first became a massage therapist I felt like I didn’t fit in.
I thought massage therapists were suppose to be in beige clothes, barefoot, smelling of patchouli, and here I was tattooed, weird, in all black. I had terrible imposter syndrome, and just didn’t feel like I was good enough or what if people don’t like me, or my massage?
It took me a while, but then I asked myself this question- what kind of massage therapist would YOU want to see?
And I became that answer.
Someone who creates a safe space.
Someone who listens to my clients when they tell me their aches, not just physically, but emotionally, and spiritually as well.
Creating a technique where your body receives enough pressure to relive knots and sore muscles, while simultaneously relaxing.
Someone who genuinely cares about your healing.
It’s been 2 years since I officially said I wasn’t going to try to continue to fit into someone else’s box and decided to work for myself. It was scary to make that decision but I am grateful everyday that I did.
So if you also feel like you don’t make sense, don’t fit in, are weird in the best way, and want to talk about ghosts and UFOs-I just may have the perfect space & massage therapist for you.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My goal when creating my business was to focus heavily on creating a safe space for all. After COVID, the world shifted and started focusing on self care and healing. Many have never considered massage therapy because they were too scared to find a space accepting of all body types, sexuality, gender identity, and over all- a place where they are free of judgement. Everyone deserves care. When you are in my space your comfort, safety, & healing are my main priority. Healing comes in all different ways. Some are looking for relaxation and to turn their mind off for 60 or 90 minutes. Others are looking for rehabilitation after injuries. Whatever the reason may be, we all deserve it!
I have laughed with clients.
I have cried with clients.
I have told and heard the best ghost stories (seriously one of my favorite things!)
I’ve know their victories & defeats.
I am so grateful to be in a position where I get to care for so many amazing people and be part of their lives!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
#1. Lose the Imposter Syndrome! Everyone is so unique and sometimes as a business owner you get stuck in the am I doing a good job? Do they like me? Are others doing better than me? Throw it out the window immediately because the moment I did I grew into the person I am today. Your people are going to find you and appreciate everything that you offer. They mean it when they tell you just how amazing you are!
#2. With that being said, do not assume you are done learning. There is always more to learn as a business owner & person. Take the classes for new services, continue your education, and never stop growing!
#3. Set your boundaries! Over working and not focusing on your own self care is going to drain you fast. Learn how to say no and feel comfortable with your decisions. You cannot fill from and empty cup, especially when your job is part of others self care routine.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
Please be weird like me. JOKING!
But not really.
My ideal client is someone that is ready to start on their self care journey. We can spend a session massaging the muscles, stretching, and practicing deep relaxing breaths but, I need you to continue this outside of our appointments as well. I’m helping kick start this healing and I need you to take the wheel as well.
They should be open minded. This is a safe space so there is no room for hate or negative ideas. Open discussion always welcome, but I will not allow any racism, homophobia, transphobia, or just general hate towards others.
They need to be respectful of not only my time, but also me. We live in a world where unfortunately there are a lot of incorrect stereotypes surrounding massage therapy. There will be no derogatory statements, inappropriate behavior, or disrespect to me or my business.
Lastly, just be yourself. You are accepted and welcomed wholeheartedly just as you are!
