We were lucky to catch up with Mackie Albertson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mackie, thank you so much for joining us today. There are so many topics we could discuss, but perhaps one of the most relevant is empathy because it’s at the core of great leadership and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your empathy?
When I was 11 I started struggling with health issues. I was later diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and Graves’ disease. Through my struggles with these diseases I learned very quickly to have empathy for others because you never know what they might be going through. I also have had many struggles with mental health through my life so again, that just taught me to be compassionate. Now I feel like these things have shaped me into a person who can empathize with others who are going through a hard time, and i’m grateful I can be that person for others.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I was born and raised in Orange County, CA. I grew up surfing and quickly knew that I wanted to pursue surfing as a career. I started competing at the age of 10 and loved every minute of It. A few years later I began to gain sponsorships from my favorite brands and that’s when I started to see my dreams become reality. Eventually surfing did become my profession and I am so grateful for that. Once covid hit all competitions stopped. That’s when I transitioned into converting my old Ford van into a tiny house on wheels. One day I posted a video of converting the van on tiktok, It did well, and since that day my whole career path shifted. I became a full time content creator posting my van build, surfing, and other cool building projects. I even built a tiny house in my backyard! Very random, but from there I started an Youtube channel with my friend Amanda investigating haunted locations. Haunted places have always interested me, so the fact I got to explore these places was a dream come true. I’m kind of all over the board with what I do, but I have so much fun with each and every category. Out of all of my passions though, i’d have to say music takes the cake. i’ve been playing guitar and writing music for over 13 years now. I’m able to express my emotions through song and It keeps me sane. In the future i’d like to share more of my music with others. Again, I am so grateful I get to share my passions with the world and encourage others to follow their dreams.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most impactful qualities i’ve found over the years would have to be empathy, an open mind, and determination. If I were to give my best piece of advice to others I would say just know anything you want to accomplish in your life is possible. You can only fail if you don’t try !
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
My biggest area of growth has definitely been my mental health. It got to the point where I couldn’t live the way I was living anymore, so I had to make the tough decision of putting my mental health first and getting that right before I could continue on with the things i’m passionate about. After months of taking time working on myself I feel better than I have in years.
