We recently connected with Macy Fulford and have shared our conversation below.
Macy , so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
Honestly, my confidence came from just doing it over and over again. When I first got into the balloon industry, there was a big learning curve—I had to figure out what worked, what didn’t, and really find my own style. It took a lot of trial and error, but through all that practice, I started to feel good about the products and services I was offering. Over time, as I kept improving and honing my techniques, I started to feel more confident taking on more work and really standing behind what I was creating.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I work in the event space as a balloon artist and decorator. I offer all kinds of balloon decor—garlands, arches, helium bouquets, twisted balloon art, and balloon structures. I really enjoy themes that push me creatively, whether it’s putting a fresh spin on a popular trend or coming up with something totally custom. My favorite style leans toward that grandmillennial look—taking bold, bright ideas and softening them into something more muted, timeless, and aesthetically pleasing. I also love when a project challenges me to stretch my skills and try something new—it keeps me growing and helps me bring something even better to the next event!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three most important qualities that have really gotten me where I am today are persistence, determination, and support. First, persistence—because there’s always a point in running a small business where quitting feels like the easier option. But what you choose to do in that moment is what defines your growth. Pushing through those uncomfortable growing pains is what builds you, both personally and professionally.
Second is determination. I might be a little hard-headed, but when I decide I’m going to do something, I go all in. I’m definitely a ‘more-is-more’ kind of girl—I can’t do things halfway, especially when it comes to something that reflects my work and my name. If I commit, I’m giving it everything.
And third is support. I honestly wouldn’t be able to do any of this without my husband and my village. I’m a mom first, so there’s a lot of juggling behind the scenes. My husband has been amazing—always helping make sure I have what I need, and being my right-hand man (and occasional assistant!) through all the chaos. That kind of support makes all the difference.
My advice to someone starting out is to find your voice, find your confidence, and lean into it! There is a space for you out there and it’s up to you to claim it and make the space better than when you found it.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
I’ve truly been blessed with some amazing clients! My ideal client is someone who can trust my vision and know that I’m going to give their event everything I’ve got. I want them to feel like they got a luxury service without the stress of handling all the details themselves. At the same time, I really value collaboration—I love when a client gives feedback and works with me to create something we’re both proud of. My favorite projects are the ones where we’re working together, making sure their ideas come to life while I bring in my expertise to tie it all together.
