Meet Macy Watkins

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Macy Watkins a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Macy, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

I am one of the few creatives in the outdoor industry! Hunting, fishing, conservation.. a male dominated industry where I stick out like a sore thumb as a female creative passionate about the outdoors.

I keep my creativity alive by creating every single day, no matter if it’s good or bad. I sketch wildlife on my iPad and sketchbook. Even when I’m in the woods observing wildlife. I also read a lot about nature and wildlife, becoming fully educated on my subject matter!

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I grew up very outdoorsy, enjoying hunting and fishing. Country stuff. I went to University of North Georgia where I picked a new trout stream to fish every day after class. I earned my degrees in Art and Communications and took a job at an outdoor industry PR agency. 2 or so years later, my social media BLEW UP during Covid. Videos of me sharing my fun southern lifestyle, stories, and jokes were spreading like wildfire. I eventually was able to quit my job.

I now do social media full time, working with sponsors, going on amazing hunting and fishing trips, and dedicating a life to the outdoors. I also just launched my merch store and print shop. Every artist dreams of the day they finally can pursue their art and earn a living off of it. My store launched online July 12th and we have crushed it! The collection features my trout smiley faces, which have been a big hit.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

1. The significance of intentional networking and relationship building. It’s the key to success!
2. The importance of CONSISTENCY in reaching your goals.
3. Never trade authenticity for approval!

My advice is that whatever plans you have for yourself.. you’re probably thinking way too small!

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

I finally came to the realization that my business wasn’t going to grow until I brought someone onto my team. I was turning away business, and missing out on opportunities. I had worked hard to bring myself to a certain point of success, but my efficiency was lacking as I grew to a point I couldn’t manage by myself.

I brought on my team member, Bethany who has changed my life and helped me reach my goals and set new ones, crushing them as well. I’ve learned to delegate, and work efficiently with an accountable team member.

Sometimes the key to growth is not being to proud to realize you can’t do it all by yourself!
