We recently connected with Maddie Polk and have shared our conversation below.
Maddie , thank you so much for joining us and offering your lessons and wisdom for our readers. One of the things we most admire about you is your generosity and so we’d love if you could talk to us about where you think your generosity comes from.
My parents. My parents are the most generous people that I know. I was blessed to grow up with both my parents in my house, together. I grew up watching them genuinely care for others. I grew up seeing them always finding ways to meet the needs of those around them, to share their talents with others, and to invite others in. Whether it be a friend, family member, animal, client, organization, or a stranger, they always selflessly went above and beyond for them/it. I learned to use my talents and resources to make others better.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I own an events company that specializes in balloons and backdrops. What I love most about what I do is that I am behind the scenes. After much work upfront with client communication and designing, I am able to come in on the event day, set up, and leave so others can celebrate. We create beautiful backdrops to help others celebrate. Life is worth celebrating, and we love helping set the stage for that to happen. We help with everything from large corporate events, to small and intimate gatherings (baby showers, bridal showers, birthdays, etc).
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Organization, relational skills, and creativity.
Growing up I would have never considered myself creative or artistic. I think I had this idea in my head to be creative/artistic I had to have “painting or drawing” skills. I’ve learned that creativity is in the eye of the beholder. We all are creatives. I’ve found that out as my business has continued to grow.
I came from the field of education. I taught kindergarten for 6 years before starting my business. I had to be as organized as possible. Building these skills up throughout those years, has really helped the success of my business. We could be juggling 9 events in one weekend, but I never feel “lost” or overwhelmed.
As a teacher, I also had to have strong relational skills. Not only was I teaching/managing 22 5-6 year olds at a time, I was also fostering relationships with their parents/guardians and making them feel comfortable and supported. Also, my teacher team as well!
My advice/ keep working on your skills. They do not develop over a day. They take time and practice.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Always. I value community over competition. I am always looking for companies to connect with, both local and far. We can gain so much from connecting with one another. We can learn from one another, support one another, and help one another. I started a balloon support community local to my area that we can all lean on each other for. Want to connect?
