We were lucky to catch up with Madeleine Perez recently and have shared our conversation below.
Madeleine, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I’ve always had a strong work ethic – some of it came from my education from primary school all the way through graduate school. But mostly my work ethic came from my dad. He grew up in New York, raised by a single mom. They had very little and struggled to get by. Sometimes they didn’t even have enough food. Despite these obstacles, he put himself through college and law school while also working fulltime. Ultimately he went onto a huge law career. He taught me that nothing is handed to you, and there is no replacement for hard work and dedication. Even when faced with major obstacles, I learned to be resilient and strong, to speak my mind, and to always know my worth. My dad passed away two months ago but these values live on in me.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’ve had an interesting career path. I started in publishing which then led to a long career as a journalist in New York. But I always had an interest in real estate so when I came to Los Angeles I decided to take a leap of faith and become a realtor. I love my job because every day is different, you get to meet the most fascinating people and most importantly, guide them through either the biggest purchase of their lives or the sale of their home, which can be deeply personal. I pride myself on always working with honesty and integrity and I think that often sets me apart from my peers. I’m with my clients through every step of the process and long after. It’s a great feeling to help someone achieve their dream.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The three skills that have helped me on my journey is my ability to read and empathize with people, to be able to study and understand the real estate market on a high level which is a huge help to my clients, and to be flexible. The market shifts constantly and you have to be able to shift with it to be successful. The advice I’d give to someone starting out is to find a great mentor. I was very lucky to have great mentors early in my career and everything I learned from them still holds true today and informs how I run my business. It’s important to know what you don’t know and be modest and willing to learn.
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
It’s easy to get overwhelmed in real estate. The best things I’ve done is set goals, time block my weeks so that I stay on track and hold myself accountable, and reach out to trusted colleagues for advice when I need to. The community of realtors I have are a great resource and often have a different and helpful perspective on things.
