Meet Madison Hopkins

We were lucky to catch up with Madison Hopkins recently and have shared our conversation below.

Madison , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

I learned work ethic from a very young age. My family was very poor growing up and we didn’t have much. I knew that if I wanted something in life, that I had to work hard for it.

My first job I ever had was actually my own business. I ran a summer camp in my backyard when I was 12 years old. I had kids from my neighborhood pay $100-$150 a week to come to my camp. I taught kids how to sew and taught them how to do different arts and craft projects. I taught them how to bake and cook. Which is crazy to think about because now I own my own business in the heart of Salt Lake teaching big kids (adults) how to create with clay. Now, these two businesses of mine have many other jobs that I have worked in between those years. I graduated high school and started school at the University of Utah. While going to school I typically worked 2-3 jobs while going to school. I would work at Jamba juice from 6am-1pm, then I would work as a receptionist at Gold’s Gym from 2pm-6pm, and then finish up my day at Beaches Tanning Salon (next door to Gold’s Gym) from 6pm-11pm. I would study when customers weren’t actively coming in and I had online work as you go classes. My life has always been work, work, and more work! As I got closer to graduating from the University of Utah, I work from 6am-4pm as a customer service representative answering customer complaints and then I worked as a server from 4:30-11pm waiting tables. All while going to school full time.

To say the least, I know how to work and work hard in order to get where I want to be. I know it takes time and maximum effort. You can wish to have something in life or you can work hard to have what you want in life.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Hi there! My name is Madi Hopkins and I am the owner of Salt Lake Pottery Studio located at 9th and 9th in Salt Lake City, Utah.

At my local pottery studio we offer a variety of pottery classes and pottery memberships where our community can come into our space and create using clay.

Our studio is very unique. We have high standards of making sure our community is first. As well as our impeccable cleanliness standards. If you haven’t into Salt Lake Pottery Studio, you are missing out! It is truly a one-of-a-kind experience.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, the three qualities that were most important to me on my journey so far is having resilience, put your ego aside, and honor your boundaries.

If you are looking to open your own business, my advice to you is to set clear boundaries, don’t give up on your dream (no matter the setbacks because there is always a setback), and put your ego aside. Your life will be much more enjoyable when doing so. 🙂

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

My husband has been the most helpful in helping me overcome challenges and build, and develop the essential skills for my business to be successful.

My husband – Chad Hopkins – owns Hopkins Brewing Company in Sugarhouse, Utah. He manages and leads a large team at his Brew Pub. He has shown me what a good leader is and I bring those skills that I have learned from him and put them to use with my team. I am so grateful to have such an amazing person to share this life with and both be small business owners in our favorite city in the whole world – SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH!
