We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Madison Malley. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Madison below.
Hi Madison, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I would say my resilience has come from freedom, and more importantly my faith.
This is now my seventh year in the hair industry. And I started Malley Made in 2022. Two and a half years ago going out on my own seemed absolutely terrifying. Deep down, I knew that everything I had ever wanted was on the other side of that fear. It had been something I had been praying about for months. And one day I woke up and I felt it. Today is the day that I start Malley Made. I had no idea of the logistics, or a timeframe, but I did know I was called to start my own business.
And I remember thinking no matter what happens whether I succeed or fail everything will work out. It was where I was called to be.
Taking that leap of faith gave me the creative freedom I didn’t know I needed. Creative freedom is monumental for any artist, but especially an entrepreneur.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Malley Made is all about serving others and creating experiences. It is so much more than just hair. I didn’t always know I wanted to do hair, but I did know I was passionate about people. I love being able to use hair as a canvas, but I am so much more passionate about the person in my chair.
What is their lifestyle like? What about their job? Do they have children? All of this plays a part in creating the right cut and color for the guest. This will also tell me their ideal maintenance and what it will take to maintain the overall look. I enjoy coloring and cutting hair, but getting to know you is what I do.
I am so grateful for all of my clients who trust me with not just with their hair but with their testimonies.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Active listening is one of the most important skills working with any demographic. It’s my mission to make sure my clients feel seen, heard, and appreciated. Not only listening to what my guests are telling me but asking questions to dive a little deeper. I always love hearing my guest and making any suggestions where professionally I see fit.
Transparency builds trust. If I have a new guest coming in before I even start their service I will give them a price quote, a time estimate, and educate them on the process of our services that day. There should be an open line of communication with guests at all times.
Hospitality is the escape everyone needs. Malley Made is where my guest come to enjoy their time. It’s their time to relax, unwind, and take care of themselves. Malley made is a place where guests can share their stories in confidence while they sip on complimentary coffee or a glass of wine. After a long work day or week they can relax with a snack break while their color is processing. My goal has always been for Malley Made to be a safe haven.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
I have been blessed with multiple influential mentors throughout my years in the hair industry. Working with my mentors, I have learned my areas of growth and how to increasingly build my skill set. They have been imperative to me becoming a better stylist and person. The best advice I have been given when it comes to my mentors is “Surround yourself with people you want to be more like.” With the help of my mentors I have been able to navigate habits I am continuously learning and unlearning. I strive to have mentors in all areas of my life including professional, intellectual, and spiritual.
