We were lucky to catch up with Maggie Hudson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Maggie, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Starting at a young age, I enjoyed teaching my younger sister anything I learned. When I started taking dance lessons, I would teach her and choreograph pieces for her in our bedroom. When I watched Circus on TV, I would try to recreate the acrobatics with my sister, hoping one day I could be in the Circus. But life took me on a different path and I got my degree in Business Administration, but I quickly realized that working in an office was not for me. I realized that doing any physical activity got me very excited and made me want to teach other people. When I moved to the US I got certified as a group fitness instructor and personal fitness trainer, which I did for over 20 years and absolutely loved. But when I started taking aerial silks lessons, I knew that this was what I wanted to focus on and teach to others. Here I am, doing for a living what I loved since I was a child: teaching, choreographing and performing aerial silks.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I teach private aerial silks lessons out of my house. It gives me so much joy to see my students progress, and I put together a student showcase every year for them to show off all they’ve learned. You can also hire me to perform at your next event. I have been performing together with a few other aerialists at festivals, birthday parties, and other events for several years. Whether you would like us to perform a themed show, or have an aerialist perform ambient acts, we will work with you to make your event extra special.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
First, you need to find out what you’re most passionate about and constantly work on getting better at it. Be persistent and keep working towards your goal, even if there are obstacles in your way. Find a mentor in your industry, network, be creative, and try to do things a little differently than others so you stand out.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed, I schedule a day off, where I can take a big breath, regroup my thoughts and look at the big picture. I look at things I might be able to delegate or get help by asking someone in the business for advice. Then I write a timeline of things that need to get done which makes me feel much more organized and calm.
