Meet Maggie Pool

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maggie Pool a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Maggie, first a big thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and insights with us today. I’m sure many of our readers will benefit from your wisdom, and one of the areas where we think your insight might be most helpful is related to imposter syndrome. Imposter syndrome is holding so many people back from reaching their true and highest potential and so we’d love to hear about your journey and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

Let’s be honest, imposter syndrome will never go away if you’re an artist or creative. Especially one that owns their own business. There’s times where I think “I’ve finally found my editing style!”, and then I capture another session in a different light or setting and feel the need to recreate all of my content. Constant improvement in my skills will always leave me stunned and feeling like an imposter, so there’s just no overcoming imposter syndrome, but the further you get into photography, skills just seem to come more naturally.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

There’s so many things I could say that I capture, but my real passion is document true love through the lens of my camera. I get to show the world “behind the scenes” moments such as a mother putting on her daughter’s necklace as she’s getting ready to become a bride. A destination elopement that only the couple and I are invited to. A bride singing to her groom down the aisle of her own wedding. The list goes on as I capture all types of affection. Not only do I photograph weddings and elopements, but milestones, family portraits, senior or college graduate sessions, and creative portraits are all in my catalog.
For Summer 2024, I currently have special priced minis running for families and couples, which can be found on my Facebook page!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Making my clients feel seen and heard is one of my top priorities. If I’m not listening to my clients needs or wants, they won’t feel comfortable and neither will I. Understanding what people want out of their session means taking the time to send out personal questionnaires, reading their body language during our time together, and adjusting the elements that are within my control.
Another important component of taking great photos is making sure that my lighting and camera settings are correct while in the midst of a session. When I take my work home with me, I need to be able to properly correct them while I edit, so if you see me constantly playing with my camera or reviewing images that I’m taking during portraits, it’s all for a good reason!
A unique vision is key to standing out from others in any line of work, and I’m happy that I get to pursue this creatively with my photography business. You won’t see all typical images on my website and I’ve worked hard to get to where I am with my creative ideas.
Shadowing a fellow and more experienced creative mind in the field you’re pursuing is a huge help to your success. If nothing else, “practice makes perfect”!

How would you describe your ideal client?

My ideal client is one that communicates their needs and wants to me straight-forward, are punctual and have respect for my time as I do theirs, organized, and are easy and open-minded!
