Meet Maikaila Grossett

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Maikaila Grossett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Maikaila, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

Have you ever felt an inner glow in your chest? It may not even be in the chest area, it just feels like it’s coming from somewhere in the middle. It feels like joy, excitement, anxiety (the good kind), and pride.
That’s how I feel whenever I’m creating the cake of someone’s ✨special event ✨ I feel an overwhelming sense of responsibility, that also fills me such gratitude. That’s how I knew I found my purpose in life.
Because it’s not “just cake.”
It’s a celebration shared by friends and family.
It’s the centre piece of the ‘Happy Birthday’ serenade.
And it’s the welcoming of new life into this world.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Baking has always been a self-care outlet for me. It was the hobby I turned to in my seasons of stress, loneliness, and avoidance, but also in my seasons of adventure, growth and ambition. So literally all the feels. And turning it into a successful business wasn’t originally on my bingo card, but the people in my life have really pushed me to pursue my passion. Now that passion, has thrown me into this world of entrepreneurship that I wasn’t prepared for, but somehow had the foundational skills to tackle each task.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

My love for analytics and spreadsheets made the accounting and administrative tasks exciting, rather than dreadful. Spending 5 years working in retail, and even longer in social services, has taught me how to provide top notch customer service. The products have obviously been developed and refined over 15 years of baking. And the countless hours spent designing my own myspace layouts, creating youtube videos and doomscrolling Tik Tok prepared me for the world of content creation 😅

However, there are still a couple of skills I’m learning for the first time, just like there is for everyone. And for those I can either take the time to learn and develop them or I decide to outsource it to someone else.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?

My husband. Building a small business is near impossible without being able to network and that is definitely my biggest area of weakness. Growing up with social anxiety, the thought of soliciting my self and my business to complete strangers is terrifying. So speaking of outsourcing, luckily for me I married a man that loves to make new connections! But not only that, he is my greatest cheerleader and always encourages to push past my comfort boundaries to help me grow as a business owner.
