Meet Makayla M. George

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Makayla M. George. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Makayla M., so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I found my purpose in middle school when my dad told me to write a superhero story! We came up with the characters, the plot, and the structure of the story. Ever since then, I’ve fallen in love with creative writing. I’m also inspired by my mom, dad, and grandmother because they tell me about their life experiences having me generate more stories and ideas.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a screenwriter, director, and producer from Houston, Tx. I am currently a student at the University of Texas at Austin majoring in English and I’m also in the process of receiving my Creative Writing Certificate. I have a YouTube channel called “SouthCinema” where I post all of my creative works and I plan to continue to post more content in the near future. My current project “Polar Mind” is my most popular short film in South Cinema earning over 900 views and counting!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Determination, patience, and trusting God was most impactful in my filmmaking journey because there has been times where I’ve doubted myself and I was in a rush to get my own films done. I learned after my second or third short film that filming takes time and there’s no need to rush to get things done. My advice would be to keep going even if you have people who don’t see your vision, make your vision happen on your own because you will find people that would love to be on your team, help you learn, and show their support. I guess it all comes down to finding your community.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I believe being more well rounded and improving areas you aren’t as strong in would be better because I, personally, had to improve on talking to people since I can be very shy. In the film community, its all about who you know and networking, so whenever I’m on a set, I make sure to at least have a conversation with everyone because you never know what or who people might know. I also make conversation because there might be an actor who’s trying to get more experience, a writer who wants to collaborate with other writers, or a director of photography who wants to make more films and is looking for a writer!
