We recently connected with Makenna Woods and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Makenna with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
I take pride in my strong work ethic, which I inherited from my family. Coming from a long line of dedicated individuals—from farmers to social service professionals—I’ve learned the value of hard work and the commitment that comes with long hours.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I began my spiritual journey when I was about 14 or 15 years old. I learned to see the world differently from my peers and started meditating. This helped me tune into myself and discover who I was at a young age.
This journey led me to a path of spirituality that felt like home. I wanted to help others on their paths and open their eyes to new ideas. So, I started making jewelry.
I made simple wire-wrapped pendants and sold them to friends and family who supported me. Eventually, I gained the confidence to participate in vendor markets. This is where everything changed. I found a community of spiritualists in Rock Hill and nearby areas who provided the support I needed.
As I developed my business, I began offering crystals, incense, and divination tools like tarot cards and pendulums. My unique selection caught people’s attention, and I became known as The Wytches Corner, a traveling witchcraft shop.
With the support and hard work, I now do this full-time, attending 12 to 13 markets each month. My inventory has grown from 50 items to over 250! I now offer a wider variety of crystals, divination tools, altar tools, decor, and handmade items.
In the coming months, I plan to open a booth in a vendor mall in Rock Hill, South Carolina. I’ll sell essential oils, herbs, and other metaphysical items. As well as build my online store. This expansion will help me learn what it’s like to own a storefront. My goal is to be a successful and profitable business by the end of the year, allowing me to sustain myself indefinitely.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
As a young entrepreneur, I have a tendency to get ahead of myself, but I’ve learned the importance of paying attention to the details—don’t skip over the fine print. My drive and determination are assets; I like to take action without hesitation. However, I’ve realized that in business, things don’t always unfold as quickly as I’d like. Success requires patience, humility, and excellent communication.
Reflecting on my journey, I wish I had invested more time in research and gained a deeper understanding of financial management. Mastering these skills is crucial for keeping up with expenses and ensuring the financial health of my business.
To fellow entrepreneurs, my advice is to take your time and be kind to yourself. Allow room for growth—every bit of progress counts. If you encounter challenges, take a moment to breathe and assess how you can improve both your business and your own well-being. Embrace the learning process; in every aspect of business, growth and mistakes are part of the journey. Stay committed and confident, knowing that you are always evolving.
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
If I found out I had a decade left, I would consider stepping away from the businesses I’ve built. To me, it represents a privilege and a choice. Every day, I wake up grateful for the opportunity to invest my time in my work, connecting with customers and nurturing relationships. While I wouldn’t regret leaving my business behind, I recognize that being an entrepreneur is a unique blessing. I would cherish the chance to spend my remaining years exploring the world, absorbing new cultures, and seeing life from different perspectives. The journey I’m on is one of freedom, and I truly believe that whatever path I choose will always be the right one for me. I’m exactly where I’m meant to be, and that gives me peace.
