Meet Malia Ewart

We recently connected with Malia Ewart and have shared our conversation below.

Malia, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.

I think this is something I am still learning how to combat, but there are few things I’ve tried in the past couple of years that have helped me. I think it’s important to ensure you make time for things that fill your cup up and help you unwind. For me I love traveling and exploring, when I feel myself hitting a wall with work, I plan a day out either to the beach or around town. Things that re-inspire me.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’m an LA based illustrator who works in animation and trading card. I graduated from CSUF in 2022, and have been fortunate enough to work in several art related professions thus far. I started out my career working for a webcomic company in 2021, which was my first professional art job (previously having worked almost 4 years at Disneyland) and taught me a lot about production pipeline, scheduling, and what it’s like to manage a creative project. In the years since I’ve been lucky enough to work for DreamWorks, Disney’s Lorcana, Warner Bros, and Upper Deck. It can be a lot of work but it’s really one of the aspects of my career I’m most proud of, it’s allowed me to be accepted into several conventions and meet more incredible artists.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I think that the ability to take feedback without responding with defense is so important. Resilience and compassion are also crucial to display as a working professional in this industry, as you are often working as part of a team and you will encounter all kinds of challenges together.

Keeping yourself open and pursue challenges head on!

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

My art directors hands down. Each project I have been in I’ve been lucky to have leaders who encourage open communication and growth in the workplace. David Chung and Garrett Gunn have been two amazing individuals in this role I’ve worked with and it’s always a pleasure— the creative free rein they foster is always so refreshing.
