Meet Malik Taylor

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Malik Taylor . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Malik below.

Hi Malik , really appreciate you joining us to talk about a really relevant, albeit unfortunate topic – layoffs and getting fired. Can you talk to us about your experience and how you overcame being let go?
So a lot of people don’t know this but I was fired from my job back in February. I was devastated for one main reason.I thought I was doing everything right. I thought I was doing my job to the best of my ability and how could I not? I got the most praise and was rewarded so how could this be happening. I’ll never forget being at the gym after leaving work, and getting that email at 5:56 pm with the bold letters “Termination”. I was confused, but more so hurt. Even though I knew this job was no longer serving me I still felt hurt. The reasoning was lackluster and could’ve been easily avoided. However, after the tears, I vowed to not let this moment hinder me. I decided to take matters into my own hands and for once be in charge of my destiny. I noticed I had a growing audience on tik tok and YouTube and I was making money from that. I told myself I gotta get to going in order to survive. It was risky and it has not been easy. I was scared cause my security was gone but I was optimistic. As cliche as it sounded that’s what pushed me through. I could’ve easily had a “woe is me” mindset but sympathy wasn’t gonna pay the bills. I made a plan and I can say I have excruciated well beyond my plans. By staying hopeful and knowing it can either turn out how I expected or better than I expected. I also would be selfish if I didn’t give thanks to God because he is what has blessed me this long being in this entrepreneurial lifestyle. Do I think social media will be my forever job? Maybe not. However, I’m so blessed to be able to stay in an industry where I can be patient until the next job or opportunity comes along. Especially in an industry I would like to work in

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
What I do for a living right now is make YouTube videos and tik toks. So I guess you can me a content creator lol. My IG and Tik Tok is @partynextshore_ and my YouTube page is The Unpopular Party

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three main qualities I feel people should master to get through is desiree, passion, and discipline. If you exhibit none of that then you’ll be just comfortable going with the flow of things. To make it in whatever industry you want, you have to put in the work. Nothing worth fighting for is handed to you. Also I will say get comfortable with the word no. That’s gonna probably be the one word you hear the most. It’s life. Rejection of all sorts is bound to happen. You gotta just let that no roll off your skin, and know yourself so well that you already know it’s going to work out the way you want it to. You may have some set back but think of it as redirection

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
Best thing to do is disconnect. With me manly making commentary I get sort of comments. Good and bad. Best thing to do (and this goes for everyone) put the phone down and go outside. You’ll see it’s really a world out here outside of this device. Simple things such as going for a walk, 10 min meditation, or just having a night without your phone can really make a difference. I know it sounds so cliche but the cheesiest stuff have an effect lol.
