We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Malika Maxat. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Malika below.
Hi Malika, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Honestly, it’s still a work in progress. In a world that’s always rushing, I’ve found that staying grounded comes from being kind to myself, appreciating my growth, and learning to value both my successes and mistakes. Confidence, for me, is about embracing the ups and downs, knowing that every step forward—even the tough ones—shapes who I am. I move forward with gratitude and a lot of enthusiasm, trusting that the path I’m on is the one that keeps me inspired and growing.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a filmmaker, director, and screenwriter, and for the past 8 years, I’ve been deeply involved in the world of cinema—learning, creating, and appreciating the magic of this art form. What I love most is the freedom to bring any idea to life, to explore stories and emotions in ways that feel limitless. It’s like being a kid again, where imagination has no boundaries. I’ve found that the more genuine and fearless I am in my work, the stronger the connection with the audience. Authenticity really does make all the difference.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The three qualities that have shaped my journey are hard work, perseverance, and a deep belief in what I do. I’ve learned that even when inspiration feels distant, the key is to start anyway. Action creates momentum, and results will follow with time. In creative fields, especially filmmaking, it’s tempting to wait for the perfect moment or burst of inspiration, but being a professional means treating your craft like any other job—it requires dedication and constant practice. The time and effort you put in are what ultimately shape your success.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I think it’s important to never lose sight of your strengths—they give you confidence and a solid foundation. But it’s equally valuable to push those strengths into new areas. For example, persistence and attention to detail can be powerful tools when learning something unfamiliar. In filmmaking, constant learning is essential. I love diving into psychology to better understand my characters, and it helps me navigate relationships in real life, too.
I’m also fascinated by science, space, and new technologies. Exploring these areas keeps me curious and inspired. So, while nurturing your strengths is key, expanding your knowledge in other areas brings fresh ideas and keeps you growing.
