We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mallory Leone a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mallory, so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.
Being in the energy healing space is wild for your self-esteem, especially in LA. You’re dealing with a range of emotions and experiences, from people thinking that what you do is ridiculous and fake to having a lot of competition to maybe not even knowing if you’re actually helping people.
Energy healing can be subtle and extremely hard to track – it’s not like taking medication or getting a chiropractic adjustment – it’s happening in the energetic and psycho-emotional realms. So, it’s very easy to feel like an imposter.
I overcame (and continue to overcome) this by sticking with it. I practice on myself and get healings from other trusted practitioners. Whenever I’m in doubt, I just double down – I’ll meditate longer, take more breaks throughout my day to address my energy, or I’ll take a new course or start learning from a new teacher. With energy, you’re always learning and changing, so it’s all about trusting yourself and the practice.
With any healing or helping practice, I think it’s so important not to expect yourself to be a master right away. A Reiki certification takes one weekend… it took me seven years to really master my practice.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I started doing spells and making potions as a kid. I think witchcraft becomes a rite of passage for a lot of young people when they’re beginning to get a glimpse of what freedom, power, and identity could feel like, but they’re still very much under the structure and control of their caretakers and the school system. Witchery gives you the sense that you can change things with something as simple as a rock and a chant!
When I started to get back into witchcraft as an adult, I was floored by how deep it is. It isn’t just silly love spells, wearing charms, or pulling a few Tarot cards under a full moon. It’s a full-on mind-body-spirit healing modality born out of ancient shamanistic practices. Before there were “witches,” there were healers that could “move between worlds.” It was their job to relay messages from the gods and bring healing and protection to the entire collective.
Witchcraft is the oldest medicine on earth – it’s of the earth, it’s primordial. I think so many people are intrigued by it because it lives inside us. Of course, it has a bit of a bad reputation to battle, but I feel very up for that fight.
My teachings aim to help you find a spiritual practice that feels good to you. I’m passionate about ditching dogma and superstitious practices that make spirituality seem intimidating or scary. I offer everything from monthly live workshops to pre-recorded online courses to 1:1 energy work and spiritual counseling.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
This is going to sound wild, but my hardships and traumas were the best things that could have happened to me in terms of going after a healing / spiritual journey. I went from being a textbook victim to (over time) completely taking my power and energy back. I don’t think there’s anything more empowering than that. Of course, everyone is different, and it’s so important to keep things like mental health and access to healthcare/mental healthcare in mind when you’re dealing with trauma.
Spiritually, it’s so important to go with your gut and learn what discernment feels like in your body. There’s SO much information out there – it can get really overwhelming, confusing, and even scary. The one thing I recommend to pretty much everyone is to work your way up to some sort of silent meditation practice. It can be walking, sitting outside in nature, dancing, or a more classical meditation practice. But creating some space and giving your brain a break by connecting to your heart and body … this is a non-negotiable for a spiritual practice, in my opinion.
From a business and marketing perspective, I would say that leading a spiritual business can feel complex. Personally, It’s taken me almost a decade to get to the point where I even want this to be my sole income. It took many years of trust, trial and error, and strengthening my skills as a practitioner, teacher, and marketer to get here, and I still have a day job. I find that it helps to have other streams of income that aren’t reliant on my spiritual energy just in case I need a break from 1:1 work or I need time to integrate spiritual lessons. I know a lot of people who have thriving spiritual businesses, and it doesn’t seem to affect them in the same way, but we’re all so different – just know that it’s not like opening an Amazon store!
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Collaboration and real community connection is so key right now. It sounds wild to say out loud, but I think a lot of us are still learning how to live in a post-pandemic reality. Many of us are building community from scratch in new cities, in new relationship dynamics, and with completely new beliefs and values systems.
This may sound strange, but I want to collaborate with and learn alongside people who question spiritual practices like mine. Not to convince them, but to create more understanding among us. I love telling new people that I’m a witch and watching their faces… sometimes they’re excited, or intrigued, or confused. But it’s always a fun conversation.
I’ve noticed that I work really well with people who are interested in physical, mental, and emotional healing. They’re already on their journey in some way, but maybe they haven’t quite solidified the mental-emotional-spiritual piece. Maybe you never call yourself a witch – that’s totally fine – but I promise you that Intuitive Witchery has something beautiful to teach you about yourself and the world around you.
