Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Manny Wilson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Manny , so great to have you with us today. There are so many topics we want to ask you about, but perhaps the one we can start with is burnout. How have you overcome or avoided burnout?
Establishing a solid routine of designated work goals in particular time frames has helped me avoid burnout. Scheduling work and specific work goals, I find myself being productive enough to feel accomplished without feeling overworked. For example…I’ll set a work goal for Monday morning starting with a window of 4am-5am. In this window, I finish editing podcast clips and prepare for my upcoming podcast topics. If there’s still time in my hour window, I begin preparing for each individual segment of the episode. If i complete 1 goal, great! At least I finished something and can finish the next few goals during my next scheduled time frame..If I complete more than the 1 goal during the first scheduled time, even better.
Setting a scheduled work window or multiple work windows throughout the day allows me the freedom to step away, enjoy other things and reset my focus for when it’s time to be productive. Of course unplanned things happen which can be difficult, but that time spent during unscheduled productive time slots should not be overlooked. It’s still requires focus and your full attention.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a 6th year sports podcaster and radio personality. I originally started my podcast (The Run with Manny Wilson) to create a platform for myself and to give sports fans like myself a voice. One of the most exciting feelings I receive is when there’s a new sports fan joining the show by calling our voicemail line. Growing up, I craved a community like platform that allowed me to have my voice heard to a radio host and listeners on the platform. Therefore, the old and new listeners who call in to share their thoughts on a topic wanting to engage in sports conversation makes me feel as if the opportunity I’m providing to join our show is appreciated. There’s gratification in knowing someone is making use of an opportunity I wish I had growing up. Feel free to join our community anytime and leave your sports take! We’ll playback your voicemail message on our next epsidoe! 219-413-9405.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One of the qualities that has helped me most in my journey is my curiosity to learn. Although I pride myself on knowing a lot about a lot, I know there’s monuments of information for me to learn about anything that has my curiosity. Embracing every opportunity to learn more and grow as a person has ultimately given me the wisdom and skillset to improve each day in my profession. Another quality that’s helped me in my journey is understanding the only thing that is permanent is change. Good and bad situations will always change in due time but in order to keep balance, it’s important to adapt in a strategic level-headed way. Last, continue to push forward in achieving your goal, and never quit! Rest if needed, but quitting prevents you from ever fulfilling what could have been your destiny. When trying to accomplish anything worth having, expect a rollercoaster of emotions throughout the journey. It’s okay to feel frustrated, upset, and down at times but you must continue to move forward. Trust in your hard work and dedication.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Emotions are a part of the journey when trying to accomplish anything worth having. Typically, I’m able to avoid the feeling of being overwhelmed by focusing on establishing self-care and work routines. My weekly routine of self-care revolves around the practice of balancing my mind, body, and spirituality. I meditate about 3-5 times a week at a minimum when things are great and when things are overwhelming. Personally, meditation helps me reflect, debrief, and embrace the present time. I also take two to three fitness classes each week. While the routine takes discipline to stay consistent, my routine is what brings me peace mentally. Practices of keeping my mind, body, and spirituality intact trickle down to me being steadily productive in my work goals, life goals, and more without feeling overwhelmed.
