We were lucky to catch up with Marc Guillén Boix recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Marc, appreciate you sitting with us today. Maybe we can start with a topic that we care deeply about because it’s something we’ve found really sets folks apart and can make all the difference in whether someone reaches their goals. Self discipline seems to have an outsized impact on how someone’s life plays out and so we’d love to hear about how you developed yours?
Throughout my school career, I never stood out for being the most outstanding student; on the contrary, while my classmates seemed to grasp ideas with ease, I faced long hours of extra studying that, together with dedication, effort and perseverance allowed me to get through each course to keep up with my grades. However, unlike many of my friends, I was fortunate enough to discover my passion for design and creativity at the early age of 12.
This discovery was not something sudden, but rather a chance encounter that gained momentum over time. From an early age, I was intrigued by the catalogs, posters and photographic compositions that my father had to review at home from his company, which manufactured optical cable, an industrial product, nothing related to design, but that awakened an interest in the world of design in me. Soon, it was clear to me that I wanted to dedicate myself to that and that I would like to be a designer and end up having my own studio. The idea of a job that involved creativity and passion excited me; I saw the whole process behind each project as something fun.
I firmly believe I was lucky to have found such a clear motivation from an early age. This discovery made a crucial difference in my journey to success and self-fulfillment. From then on, I was able to channel my energy and give meaning to every endeavor, knowing that I was moving in a clear and meaningful direction. This ingrained purpose has been the engine that drives my steps.
The 12-year-old boy who discovered his passion for design and worked hard at school to become a designer became the catalyst for my self-discipline, allowing me today to work on something that I am truly passionate about and enjoy every day.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
At JCS Multimedia we are digital allies for our clients, and we guide them step by step into their digitalization process. From the beginning, we have built a passionate team, merging talent and dedication, to carry out the unique vision of each client. This has allowed us to get involved in each project to immerse ourselves in the essence of each brand, understand their objectives and create customized solutions that reflect their values and personality.
To do so, we start from a triple vision that we see perfectly reflected in all our design projects, as recognized by our collaborators and clients.
On the one hand, there is an Ecological Vision with which we contribute to offset the CO2 emissions of our work through the foundation “Creadoras de Bosques”, helping them in their goal of creating a Greener World; also, a Social Vision, which lets us contribute with part of our profits to the Sant Joan de Déu Hospital, in Barcelona, for the research of childhood cancer; and finally, an Ethical Vision, transmitting sincerity, transparency and honesty to our clients, all this from our own self-demanding nature, as nobody imposes it on us, but we are convinced that these small steps contribute to building a better world.
In addition, thanks to our work and effort, we have had the recognition and fortune to be one of the nine companies selected by the Barcelona City Council and Barcelona Activa to represent them at the prestigious ISE 2024, the most important audiovisual fair in Europe, with our content solutions in 3D Videos, Holograms, AI, Drones and Augmented Reality.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
If I look back and analyze my personal and professional journey to date, I can clearly highlight three lessons learned.
Firstly, having a humble attitude and let other people accompany me. As I mentioned before, when I was 12 and my passion for design began, my parents took me to the design studio where the catalogs I saw at home were created. There, the owner and founder of the design studio, Jaume Canadell Suñé, who gives his name to my current company JCS, showed me the projects they did and how they executed them. There I could also see and tinker for the first time an Apple computer of the time. I had long conversations with him, and I followed many of his tips for my training process, and I even did an internship in the company to finish my studies and for my final project at university.
Secondly, being fearless and daring. No one in my family had ever been dedicated to the area of creativity, but it was clear to me, and I threw myself into studying design without hesitation, finishing my studies in the UK (Winchester School of Arts) because its project-based curriculum fit perfectly with me.
Nor did I hesitate at the age of 26 to leave the permanent job I had by then in a company based in San Francisco to undertake my own personal project and create my own design studio, something I had always dreamed of, but where I was going to start completely from scratch without any client.
Last, but not least, making the most of the journey and the social part. I have always been very clear about my goals, but I have never forgotten to enjoy my job and the people with whom I am sharing this journey. Since I was a child, because of my personality, I have done things slowly, but with perseverance. Always with honesty, I have managed to create trustworthy relationships with both colleagues and clients.
These three lessons have led me to be the owner and CEO of JCS Multimedia, the same company where I started working in the field of design, where I did my first internship and where I collaborated externally as a freelancer. In 2020, in the midst of the Covid pandemic and together with my brother, who has always supported me in all my decisions, we had the opportunity and did not hesitate to acquire the JCS studio, despite the difficulties of that time, to take over from its founder (Jaume, my mentor), who at the age of 67 now and almost retired continues to accompany us on our journey.
Thus, I have seen my first dream come true and I am convinced that, by working in the same way, some more will come.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The main challenge we face at JCS Multimedia today lies in the dynamic and fast-paced environment in which we find ourselves. As a company which is dedicated to design, creativity, communication and technology, we are immersed in a universe in constant evolution, where new solutions, technologies and professionals emerge with exponential speed. This constant change modifies the needs and interests of our clients and forces us to be constantly alert, reinventing and adapting ourselves non-stop.
Fortunately, we have an exceptional team of professionals and collaborators who are passionate about their work, which allows us to offer our clients the latest innovations and to develop cutting-edge projects. At JCS, the ability to reinvent ourselves is nothing new to us. We have evolved from being an agency focused exclusively on graphic design to the audiovisual and digital world, with graphic design now being a complementary service. In addition, we have incorporated solutions such as Digital Catalogs or Augmented Reality when we identified their potential for our clients.
Our philosophy at JCS has always been being one step ahead. We strive to be aware of the latest trends and technologies and to apply them, so that whatever innovations emerge tomorrow, they are available to our clients the next day. We maintain an open mindset for change and a flexible structure that allow us to adapt with agility to market demands. In short, we are committed to remaining a leader in innovation and to providing our customers with creative, cutting-edge solutions at all times.
