We were lucky to catch up with Marcela Alonso recently and have shared our conversation below.
Marcela , so glad you were able to set aside some time for us today. We’ve always admired not just your journey and success, but also the seemingly high levels of self-discipline that you seem to have mastered and so maybe we can start by chatting about how you developed it or where it comes from?
I get my self-discipline from the moments when I had no other choice. From sitting alone with nothing but my own thoughts and deciding to keep going anyway. I learned to show up for myself because no one else was going to save me. My discipline is part survival instinct, part stubborn hope, and part proof that I refuse to let my circumstances define me. Even when my heart is broken or my bank account is low, I find a way to keep creating, keep working, and keep believing that something better is possible. That’s where my strength comes from.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’ve built my career at the intersection of storytelling and survival. I’m a filmmaker and a creative entrepreneur, and much of my work is rooted in exploring the hidden sides of human experience—especially the emotional realities of women whose stories are often dismissed or misunderstood. What feels most special about what I do is the honesty. Whether I’m developing a film, writing, or building an online platform, I’m always trying to create something that makes people feel seen.
Right now, I’m focused on my next film project, which blends elements of documentary and fiction to tell a story about reinvention after loss. I’m also expanding my content into new formats, including short-form video and digital courses, so I can reach more people who connect with my work. If there’s one thing I’d want people to know about my creative life, it’s that it comes from a place of resilience. Every project I do is a reminder that no matter what you’ve been through, you can still create something beautifu
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, I’d say the three most important qualities that shaped my journey have been resilience, resourcefulness, and emotional intelligence.
Resilience has carried me through times when nothing was certain—when I had to keep showing up even when things felt impossible. Resourcefulness helped me find creative solutions, whether it was funding a project, building a platform, or navigating unexpected setbacks. And emotional intelligence has been essential for understanding both myself and the people I work with. It taught me how to communicate honestly, set boundaries, and stay connected to my purpose.
For anyone early in their journey, I’d say: don’t underestimate the power of small, consistent actions. You don’t need everything figured out to start. Focus on building self-trust and staying adaptable. Learn to sit with discomfort and keep going anyway—that’s where your confidence will come from.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The number one challenge I’m currently facing is securing funding to bring my projects to life. I’m working on producing new short films and launching a podcast that explores untold personal stories, and both require resources to do them right. To overcome this, I’ve been actively researching grants, connecting with potential investors, and exploring partnerships that align with my values. I’m also expanding my digital presence to grow my audience and create more opportunities for crowdfunding and sponsorships. It’s definitely a lot to juggle, but I believe in these projects and know that finding the right support is worth the effort.
